Art Installation for Blind People (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
I am in the beginning stages of creating an immersive art experience for blind people. I cannot go into much detail because of course I don't want my creative idea to be stolen but I have come to a point where I've hit a dead end. The main part of the exhibition is based on poetry and experimental music created by me. So there's sound involved. I have also considered some sort of wrist vibration, to add to the experience as well as a tactile/feeling aspect. My problem is the tactile/feeling aspect, would you prefer to have something done to you, or be able to do something in the exhibition? Without giving my idea away, for a silly example that relates but is not the idea: would you like having your feet tickled (action being done to you), or putting a puzzle piece together (you doing an action). In addition I don't want to make an obstacle like course but my exhibition idea is starting to seem like that. Would you be irritated or annoyed with having to lift (not heavy) or move things? And lastly would you even be interested or consider going to an art installation for blind people at all? Your comments, ideas and input would be soo appreciated.

From a student of Art History and Anthropology, interested in creating exhibitions for disabled people.

Also I saw this in another post, I'm English:

Noted. :)

Edit: This is something they could just do at regular exhibitions, I'll start advocating in my little space to make it happen.

I haven't been on Reddit in over a year, I decided to try it again tonight and yours was the first post I found -- I'm very glad I did. As a blind guy, I love this idea, art can be about so much more than just vision and while that might have particular significants to someone who is blind, including other senses is something everyone can appreciate. In terms of sensory type exhibits, I've come across some, but the focus is generally on tactile ... being able to touch 3d objects. Not art-related as such, but I've also visited various gardens that are arranged in such a way that a person can experience a variety of smells and textures. These gardens often have a path, or ropes that people can use to guide themselves through each area or station. In this way, human guides become optional an the person can assert a greater degree of independence. Anyway, I know you can't go into too much detail, but this sounds like a really awesome idea and I' hope you can make it happen. I'm still figuring out how to use Reddit after such a long time, but will try and monitor this thread or feel free to message me -- happy to provide any additional thoughts or input.

Thanks so much, I love reddit, sorry you don't enjoy it as much. These are the things they supposedly train us to think about in Art History (accessibility). But I don't think in general students go above and beyond, well where I'm from. Including nature in an exhibition is definitely a beautiful way to move outside the white walls of a gallery space. Something to think about, as well as it being varied for blind people. Independence is really what I would like and this idea sounds brilliant. Thank you, I work on it everyday and the idea becomes clearer in my mind, soon I'll be able to write my proposal and get it going. Thank you I will message you if I come across any other issues or have any ideas.

I visited a museum in New York City that had an exhibit (which I think was called New York in the dark or something like that). The visitor was blindfolded, and you were taken on a tour of the sounds, smells and sensations of New York, but built inside the museum. It was amazing and interesting.

Sounds interesting, what sensation did you enjoy the most? I've thought about the blindfolding thing but i think the way I would like my exhibit to work is for it to work for both sighted and non-sighted people.

Edit: so many more questions, did each person have a guide? how did they guide you? I have to think about making this economical in the sense that I may not have to depend on soo many guides to make it work, yet also allow everyone to feel like the exhibit is for them. Cause the guides have to take breaks too. I'm actually just sharing my inner workings now.

There was a railing we followed, the railing had textures on it that charged for each section. The part I enjoyed the most was the sounds of the taxis and people calling out for them, slight breeze. It really put me in the moment.

I guess you become really aware of your other senses and different sensations. Thanks for sharing that with me.

My pleasure, it was a unique experience unlike anything I've ever been through.

I'm not visually impaired, but your idea sounds really cool to me, from one artist to another. Keep at it. Just because you didn't receive feedback doesn't mean it's a crappy idea or something. I really like that your mind even went there.

Thank you, I know I didn't give a lot of info out but your support is encouraging, I really appreciate art and want to make it accessible for others. I just assume everyone is sleeping or busy. In any case perusing this reddit has given me lots of interesting ideas. I don't really consider myself an artist but I have some ideas I'm willing to work to bring to light even if I'm not the most brilliant or talented artist. I'd rather do it myself then give it to someone else to mess up so. Also what's your medium?

I feel similarly about my art; maybe I'm not particularly brilliant, but I feel compelled to create beautiful and colorful paintings... Usually, they're a mood. I wish I could show you, but I'm not sure how. I mostly paint... Acrylic, usually... I also paint stones, using paint pens and acrylic. Thank you for asking. I used to play classical piano, which has been a incredible release of emotion and passion, but I've moved on from that as I do not have the time or discipline to study it anymore as a single mother. I now love to paint, write, and be close to things which I believe bring me closer to the Universe itself. ❣️
