What tech tools do you use for reading? (self.Blind)
submitted by rtillerson
A very good friend of mine is an audio learner and he is interested in various text-to-speech options for reading length the articles and academic papers. Does anybody have any experience with these type of tools? He has tried Kurzweil software with limited success but right now he doesn't have access to it. What text-to-speech or speech-to-text engines do you recommend? Are there any other tools or services that would be useful for this problem?

It depends. If it's a textbook, Bookshare and Learning Ally are nice options. If he's mostly visual, but wants the audio for lengthy passages, there are features on phones, especially iPhones, that speak chunks of information at a time. Does that describe something your friend would like, or is he blind and using assistive technology?
