I just downloaded the ‘Be My Eyes’ app and I’m excited to be able to help blind/visually impaired people perform tasks! There are only 186,617 blind on the app now and over 3 million volunteers. Hope we can spread the word to more people on the app that need help! (self.Blind)

Thank you mate, its you and the over 3 million other people like you that give me hope for humanity.
I really like the concept of the app, and knowing that help is just a call away makes me feel a lot better!

I rely on the app a lot. I use it 3-4 times a week depending on my need. I actually used it yesterday while shopping. I got this lovely lady from america helping me with fashion. We both picked out 4 great Jean's for a bargain. There was a little confusion regarding currency as she only understood dollars and cents not pounds and pennies. We worked it out. Sometimes I use the app while cooking. Need help with a few aspects with that. And also like to use the app when I've lost something. It saves me so much time. Also was really handy one night I was sure someone was outside on my property. I used the app thankfully I was put straight in touch with someone I told them I think someone is outside and they directed me so they could look. There was and I called the police. So it more than just useful for me but potentially a game changer and life saver. I'm much more independent when I know a button away someone can be my eyes.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I’m so happy to hear you have received good help from it 😌

I’ll download it since you’ve reminded me. :) I think a lot of us are a little hesitant to get help from strangers over the phone and I know several people who were kind of burned out by Aera with how expensive it was. With that as a first impression it makes it harder to remember the other options.

I think that ira is working on having cities pay for free service for blind people in specific public places like subway stations and airports. In places like that, I think it's definitely beneficial to get assistance from somebody who actually knows what they're doing. That being said, I agree with you that at this point, the service is absurdly expensive and just isn't worth it for most people

My wife has used this for help reading labels at the grocery store.

It’s a great app. I hardly use it but it’s there when I need it.

Hopefully you get something. It could be a while though as with that many volunteers, who knows...

I've been active on be my eyes since 2015 and only got 2 calls to help. So it's rare, and a flaw of the app is a lot of the helpers tend to switch off the app or forget it totally exists because we only are called so rarely to help anyone.

It should be geographically based so the people closest to you get the call first. And if they dont answer it should move outwards towards the next person geographically. And so on. I want to help but im not needed or there's something wrong with the app.

Good idea, although even then you'd hardly get very many calls.
There are 2 reasons for that.

one being the ratio of blind users vs helpers, which is a really very good thing,
and the other is I think the app was specificly designed this way, so that helpers would not be overwelmed or give a significant amount of their time to help.

Its like, you can feel good that you are helping, or provide help to those who need it, without going quite so much out of your way to do so.

And yes, I use the app very often.

A lot of blind people don’t need the app as much as sighted people think we do.

It’s nice that it’s there but personally, I hardly use it.

I’d recommend writing to the developers and telling them what you think.

I just used this app earlier today! Volunteers are really kind. Thirty seconds of your day means a lot to other people—thanks for your time.

The app helped me when I needed to reset my pc and there was no speech.

I think this is because most blind people are, to be blunt, old. It will change.

I love this app. In one year I have only gotten 3 calls. I keep hoping my mom and I get matched.

I like using it in the grocery store, but it’s a little clunky. Overall, it’s easier to just shop with a store associate.
bradley22 1 points 3y ago
Yeah, I’d not use it in a store plus there’sseeing ai if we need to read something.

It’s a nice app but there are other ways now. Having said that, using it for things with no speech might be useful if seeing ai can’t help.
