Accusations of being a fake online. (self.Blind)
submitted by 4247420
Anyone else had accusations online chatroom or social media that you are a fake because they assume blind people cannot do this or that? Or am I the only one?? Its a daily struggle and often leads me to avoid online social media yo the point whereby I no longer have any social media account other than whisper and reddit. I find it painstaking and repetitive of explaining the same thing or answering the same questions which should all be common knowledge these days that blind people have more access than ever before but yet people still believe we are still using outdated methods of reading and writing.

Yep. Happens all the time. I tell them that they are just demonstrating their ignorance about blindness.

Most of the time, I'll just tell people I'm legally blind, and they may think "oh you're not really blind then" and I'll have to explain lol. Otherwise, I actually find very often that the reverse problems happen. People assume too much from me. Yesterday I was in a voice chat on discord with someone streaming a game I couldn't see, but I wanted to keep the conversation going and stuff so I started googling things about the game, who made it and so on. The game was VR, so I was also asking him questions about the VR headset and how it's like. Overall, it always ends up like that. Me asking questions to try and relate to a group of friends as they play together without being able to include me (not their fault) and it can just get tiring, since they never ask or say anything until I do. In situations like that I wish they assumed less of me, because trying to relate to all these people becomes hard. So either way, if they assume to little or too much it's a lose-lose situation lol

I've experienced similar. Especially in party situations when everyone is playing a local multiplayer game or is watching a film. My plan is to just acquire a portable monitor, HDMI signal splitter, and a long cable in order to increase my ability to participate with others.

I'm not blind. I'm an accessibility expert with a few friends thst are blind. Blind people being accused of faking it seems to be a very common problem. You also have to remember that there are a lot of idiots and trolls on social media. These people are looking for an argument anywhere they can find it. Its better to just completely ignore them rather than bothering to try and explain. At the same time, it might be best not to identity yourself as blind unless it is absolutely nessisary.

IT's not your fault people are ignorant about blindness, and the different levels of blindness. To them, you either are, are you aren't blind. Yes, it is maddening. You want to tell them, "I'd like to see you make it through just ONE day of what life is like for me!"
But what you can do is continue to educate them. Write a short description of what you want them to know, and copy and paste it into your Notepad or Word. Then you can simply copy it and paste it whenever you need it. And if they continue to argue with you, just move on. Some people just can't help but be stupid and uninterested in betting themselves. But YOU can. YOU can continue to be the better person.

It is a thing, but you have to remember there are so much fewer of us as compared to everyone else. If they are interested in learning past their initial burst of ignorance, I will answer questions, if not, I will move on. It does no good wasting energy on them if they are being willfully ignorant.

Constantly lol. "How are you typing if you're blind?" with my fingers, just like you buddy. The keys don't move around...at least I sure hope they don't.

Oh yeah. If they keep doing I start acting amazed by their skills in optometry since they seem to know so much about my vision without even meeting them. Or just tell them that screen readers have existed since the 1970s and they need to get with the times.

If the subject matter of the group is not regarding blindness, don't nention your blindness. This has been my solution. Not that I'm hiding, but if my question has nothing to do with my lack of vision, I won't refer to it.

It's happened. But I've also been accused of faking my gender, nationality and bodysize online amongst other things, I think a lot of people on the internet are just generally quite cynical and like to argue or frustrate you.

I say severly Sight Impaired instead of blind. Saves a few arguments.

Members of my extended family used to think I was faking it. Mind you, I was seeing a specialist every three months and having surgeries on my eyes, so I don't know how they could think I was faking it. It sadly doesn't surprise me that strangers on the internet might make the same accusation.

Has anyone here experienced being accused of faking blindness IRL? I'm getting my first cane very soon and I'm super worried about being accused of faking
elusivespark 1 points 3y ago
I used to worry about that too but not anymore. Those people accusing me of faking it? They haven't seen me nearly fall down a flight of stairs because I literally didn't see them at all. You know you need the cane better than anyone else, so don't let anyone else try to tell you that you don't.

I’m always baffled when I get the whole “well you don’t look blind” wtf does that even mean? To which I kindly reply “you don’t look ignorant yet here we are” and they either laugh and I educate them on what it means and the different levels of blindness or they get mad and walk off and I enjoy the rest of my day.
