Life as a deafblind and autistic man. (self.Blind)
submitted by 4247420
I wanted to share a little about me as a deaf blind man whom also has mild autism. I have ushers type 1 and live a simple but satisfying life. I'm often greeted by others on discovery about my disadvantages as the poor guy and get sympathy. But I reject it because I'm not just happy but thriving. I wear hearing aids and hopefully might be getting cochlear implants this year. I dont get any support from governments or charity agents although I'm still waiting on a duel purpose dog, hearing and guiding. I do quite well in terms of independence. I have light and movement perception left and I'm likely to loose everything by the time I'm 35. I'm currently 29. And I'm pretty cool with it.

Blindness to me along with hearing and autism has opened up a new world for me. A world whereby I'm no longer bound to bias by my own eyes. I'm no longer tied to not hear or grounded by my mind. The combination for me has transported me to do better. And I do. I love philosophy and use philosophy for my insight and outlook on my world and the world we live in. I use my autism in a way that inside my mind anything is possible. I'm proud to say that I'm an inventor. A poor one for the moment. But I'm proud that despite my disadvantages and so little support and equipment. I still function and thrive.

I wanted to share this with you guys because whether you are new or experienced at being blind the only limitation you have is yourself. What you decide to do with yourself determines your true will and character and your patience that determines who you are. For me? My imagination, creative and skill is no longer limited by my sight, hearing or autism. And yours doesnt have to be either.

Live strong, live free and live with the peace and acceptance you are willing to give to yourself.

This is a lovely read, thank you. I'm also autistic and I'm not deaf but I do have auditory processing disorder (comes with the territory of autism, usually) which makes it tough to watch things without captions. I'm still trying to cope with my declining vision, and I always feel alone because I'm not just blind...I also have all the issues that stem from being autistic (as well as some other stuff, but I'm not down to throw a pity party right now lol). This post means the world to me. Thank you so much.

Hello! I'm legally blind and autistic with auditory processing difficulties. I went to a great books college to study philosophy then to grad school for psychology. I have always worked to support myself and currently work in health policy to improve outcomes for the disadvantaged. I also ignore the pity and platitudes. Happy you are doing well!

You are amazing. I would love to hear more. Especially how you are no longer tied or grounded by your mind. I am legally blind, my whole life. I'm 51. I feel my only limitation has been that I have never been able to drive, and transportation where I live in not available. Other than that, I'm ok. But you, you sound like you are doing excellent, my friend! I hope you get your service dog (new best friend!) soon!!

Thank you so much. I'm actually writing a book on my tips and secrets to a happy healthy mind and meditation I practice and hoe I live.

May I ask, do you follow the Eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truths? If so, I can relate.

Non, it's my own techniques. Completely mine.

It sounds like you've got a good thing going. Meditation can help so much. I was curious, because for nearly 2 decades I studied Buddhism. Being mindful and in the moment is the best thing one can do. But something tells me you already know that. Not many people are so in tune as you seem to be. I think it is wonderful.
