Study for Grappling Martial Artists with Visual Impairments (self.Blind)
submitted by BarrelofNerds
Hello All!

I'm not sure if there are any Redditors here who participate in grappling sports like judo, wrestling, or jiu jitsu, but if there are, I'm just starting a new research project that might interest you.

The project is about the experiences of adults with visual impairments who regularly participate in, or have in the past regularly participated in, grappling sports and martial arts such as judo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, or wrestling. We are seeking ten participants to complete a 60-90 minute phone interview related to their experiences participating in grappling sports. Not all individuals complete the screening questionnaire will be included in the study. If you are not interested in participating in this study, please disregard this post.

In order to be considered for participation in this study, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Have a visual impairment

2. Currently participate or have participated in a grappling sport on a regular basis (examples of grappling sports include but are not limited to judo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and wrestling).

3. Be 18 years of age or older.

4. Be willing to complete an interview (via phone call) for 60-90 minutes.

5. Be willing to exchange email correspondence before and following the interview.

If you believe you meet these criteria and are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Nicole Kirk at tnkirk@umich.edu. Participants who complete the interview process will receive a $25 gift card as a token of appreciation for their time.

Thanks, everyone!

I wear glasses, but I am not blind. Are you looking for more serious impairments?

Thanks for asking! I'm looking for people who meet the criteria for low vision (20/60 with best possible correction) or anyone who meets the criteria for legal blindness in the USA (20/200 or a visual field of 20 degrees or less with best possible correction.

Fair enough, I don't meet that criteria at all, but if you wanna do a preliminary interview with a glasses wearing guy feel free to reach out. Good luck.
