DAE Have jobs with a bunch of unpredictable travel and retreats? (self.Blind)
submitted by BasicChick314
I am supposed to be starting an AmeriCorps service year program where I’ll be the first blind person they worked with but today at orientation I learned about a lot of travel requirements I didn’t know existed. I have to serve for a certain amount of hours so if my primary site is closed on a day that I’m supposed to serve, I have to go to another organization that same day and serve on a project that could be anywhere in the city. And there are service days where we are also required to go to new locations but there’s not a set schedule on when they tell you where you have to go so it could be a week to a few days in advance. I am fine with getting Owen and M to my primary site and other locations I’ll be at often but if I’m only going to be somewhere for a day and I don’t know too far in advance I can’t exactly go scope it out and see what’s going on around there in terms of public transportation like I usually do. Looking at Google maps is one thing but actually living it and having to travel is way more insane sometimes so I was wondering how you fine people of Reddit navigate this situation? Also there are two retreats during the program and you have to participate in all activities and it’s very team oriented and things but the campus that they take place on it’s pretty far to get mobility at and we don’t know the exact address until the days of the retreat so getting around is going to be interesting and I wonder if anyone has tips for that

Hi, I've heard a couple of people do presentations regarding their experiences in that program. They've been with the National Federation of the Blind. I honestly don't remember who they were, but a friend may know, and I'll come back with contacts if she has them.

Awesome :-) thanks so much. It’s good to know that other blind people have done AmeriCorps programs. I know for this one in my city I am the first which is a bit scary so I’d love to pick their brains
