Developing Technology to Help People Learn Braille (self.Blind)
submitted by B-Dawg27
Howdy! My name is Brandon Spiegel, and I am currently a student at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas! A group of my peers and I are currently developing a braille learning device that we think could be an inexpensive practice tool for individuals with the need or desire to learn the language! Your input would be so valuable for us to aid in our process of creating the best possible product to give more people the opportunity to learn to read braille. We would appreciate so much if, given the time, you would fill out our quick survey that would take no more than 2 or 3 minutes to complete, to help us with our passion project! We want to develop something that can be accessible to all people, so taking the time to complete this survey would be so meaningful to us! Thanks and Gig’ Em!

Who is your primary demographic?
• Young children learning braille
• Print readers who went blind as adolescents or adults
• Parents, teachers of the blind or other sighted people wanting to learn braille

Also, braille is a code, not a language.

agree Braille is a code, one would not call the Morse code a language.

Thank you for your question. Currently, we are targeting anyone that is looking to learn braille as we hope that this concept will be able to provide value to a lot of people. However, we are open to making the target more limited if it would be a better approach.

Yeah, I also don’t think a general tool is useful to all either. I think there’s different needs in each category and having all three would be either a overcumbersome system, very expensive, or too bloated.

I feel that each group requires different tools, so you should design a tool to help just one group.

Thank you for the feedback, I will make sure to keep that in mind going forward and will make sure to consider this when working on the project.

I took your survey, but it seemed very vague. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish.

Thank you for your feedback. In regard to the survey, we are at the beginning stages to we are just looking to get general feedback to see if people will think the concept would be useful or not. Sorry about the vagueness, I will keep that in mind going forward.

I think what you are describing sounds like the $1. It's an interesting idea but the enlarged dots aren't super helpful in teaching you how to read standard Braille.

I don't think the problem is that Braille technology is lacking––the problem is the cost.

Interesting! Thank you for the input, it is similar to Taptilo to an extent. Thank you for the feedback, I will make sure to keep the dot size in mind when working on this. I will also look to make sure to see ways that costs can be kept down. I hope that you have a great day!

I am a guy blind since birth, and my project for this year is upgrading in an online course to learn Unified English Braille so I can be a Braille transcriber either for the schoolboards or for the local library for the blind.
