How do blind people use the the task-based reCAPTCHA?(self.Blind)
submitted by twenty_95percent
I was wondering how accessible the types of CAPTCHAs with things like "Select all squares with traffic lights. If there are none, click skip." Also, is the audio challenge alternative offered by reCAPTCHA something blind users find useful? How do blind users complete the reCAPTCHA?
Thanks for sharing your experiences!

none of the audio alternatives I've ever seen are task-based, and a visual task-based captcha is as usable as a numerical one - i.e. not at all to the vast majority of us.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Is the audio alternative provided suitable when those CAPTCHAs are present?

sometimes. if I had other disabilities, even minor hearing loss I think I'd really struggle.

Those provided by Google (called recaptcha) have this feature that if you are signed in in your Google account they generally don't show at all, unless you are using a public vpn or something. When you are signed in it's just a checkbox you have to check to swear that you are not a robot. Since I have a severe hearing impairment as well as being blind and English isn't my native language, I almost never can use audio captchas.

Oh, I did not know about that. Thanks for sharing! Is the checkbox accessible? What has your experience been?

Yes. It's quite accessible. I just need to move on it and press space bar to check it and it's done. My experience with Google's captchas has been good because of that. It's other captcha codes that are a problem. Until a little while ago, there was an add-on called Webvisum that solved the normal, character in the picture kind of captcha codes. But now it's broken and we have to use paid services like captcha be gone, Rumola and Anti-Captcha.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and for letting me know about the paid services. I'm sorry to hear Webvisum stopped working.

I generally have no issues with audio ones if they have audio it’s usually sufficient and I am good. But I am also very super skilled on the computers.

Thankfully most sites seem to use Google's reCaptcha, and their audio based works like a charm for me.

Right when I check the box it says, "press button for audio challenge", I press that it speaks a couple words, it's one Tab key to get to the inputer field, only need to enter one word correctly and done!
