Will most likely be legally blind in 5 years or so, what should I go to college for/(self.Blind)
submitted by Cinema_waste-land
I currently see 3/360 in my left eye and 20/50 at best in my right eye. My right eye will need a cornea transplant sometime in my future, and I doubt that goes well.
So what kind of college degrees are good for blind people? I want to be able to work once I'm blind.

Anything business related, most social sciences, computer science, if it interests you. I'm a legally blind software engineer. I know there are a few others on here with vision as bad or worse than mine, and I used to know one programmer who was completely blind. It can be competitive, but it can also be a pretty accessible career that pays 6 figures.

I'm losing my central vision and I'm an iOS developer, I can still see dead-center for now but I'm curious what tools you use to be efficient? I've seen emacspeak which is really cool but there's no Xcode equivalent. Thinking about switching to more backend / server stuff and less UI/app code. I'd love to here any information you have.

Can you elaborate which field of business would be best?

If you are creative, PR is a good career path. There is a lot of reading and writing, which can easily be done via screen reader. However, there is a good chunk that involves creative brainstorming and quick thinking.
My friend does it and I always think it is an underrated career path.

What are you interested in and what do you find that you're good at?

Art stuff. I play in a metalcore band and I'm about to direct my first feature. But obviously those don't pay the bills. I figure there is something business related I can do since a screen reader would assist me.

art is interesting you could say teach music?
so if you were not going blind right? what would you be doing, imagine. you’re now no longer doing blind your entire life is in front of you. you pick what? or do you not know?
blind people can do all sorts of stuff I’ve seen things that blind people aren’t suppose to do and they you know what, they just do it. I have a friend trying to be a blind baker and chef. I know of blind medical students. obviously you can’t be a blind uber driver haha! but honestly blind people can do a lot of things. so tell me what you’d do and we’ll work from there.

I'm currently working on my first feature film and getting ready to submit a screenplay to competitions. Also working on my bands EP.
I guess for a real career I'd do something business related.

well interesting well I know some people do work in both music and film they’re both harder industries to work in, being the camera person would certainly be hard but for instance being the actor is possible blind, the screen writer is also possible, and many other roles. getting in is difficult even for sited people but yeah. I would sayb all of those film music, and business is fair game to blind people. why not? I think having been able to seen it’s going to help you act more naturallyb like any other person because you have seen how it needs to be done, so it may be okay.
hmm. most of business seems very nonvisual so that would work.
I also know a lot of good blind musicians. and even good ones. there’s a guy who works and has his own studio, another teaches music and plays in bars. and many other music people. I know there’s blind actors too.

I have a myriad of eye problems so I'm expecting the worst and hoping for the best!

If vision wasn’t an issue, what degree would you choose?
I know blind people who did well in business, psychology, law and computer programming.
Cinema_waste-land [OP]1 points3y ago
Something to do with business. I'm very good at micromanaging and getting things done/very good on the phone and with computers.
ESTJ1371 points3y ago
well that’s fine. blind people own businesses work in business, and many other business stuff. personally not my thing but you can absolutely do it.

not sure where you are from but most of the people i know who are SSI who are working are working in the area of sight, e.g. hospital liaisons. charity workers mobility instructors. and one is a personal trainer/motivator type person. i am also waiting on a corneal graft but if all does not go well one of those routes is my plan. i wish you the best of luck on your journey and i hope it all goes well for you. if you need a quick chat then dm me any when.
