Hewizo: A better text to speech application (self.Blind)
submitted by spacewalking
Hi guys,

First time posting here. I created a web application and a chrome/Microsoft edge browser extension that I really think could be useful for the community and I would love to get your feedback on it. The application converts any article to audio, cleans up ads and lets you save your articles and reading progress. Currently it can read articles in over 30+ languages. The application allows you to use the browsers text to speech voice which is free or our own human sounding AI voice.

We curate news articles from the web and make the top 10 articles use the better AI voice for everybody. You can also copy paste any article url you want to read or better, use the browser extension to do this seamlessly. Most functionality on the site is completely free but we have a subscription option for the AI voices.

This is still in the early stage of the product and I believe a lot can be improved, especially accessibility wise. My plan is to improve accessibility and making the ai voices cheaper and create a better product overall.

P.S. If you really like the AI voices, DM me with the email you registered on our site and I'll give you a 3 month free trial with all features enabled. Thanks

So what does this do that my screen reader can't?
spacewalking [OP] 1 points 3y ago
It has aggregated news. You have the ability to save your articles so you can stop and go back to them anytime, both from the curated feed or any link you copy/paste on it. It cleans up all the ADs too. It also allows you to customize you feed based on your preference so you can eliminate topics you don't care about.

As for the reader; the premium voice uses a new AI technology and sounds very natural/human-like. We had it available for free but the cost of keeping it running wasn't sustainable for our small team of two. If you would like to test it, PM me with the email you registered on the site and I can give you access for few months. We are still trying to improve it so if you have any suggestion, we would love to hear them.

Hmm ...I actually like this concept quite a bit. I would want some more integrations that, for example, lets me quickly send something long I'm looking at to the hewizo interface, but overall this is a really nice first attempt I would say. Not sure where the AI voice is being generated from but it sounds quite nice. I can see me using this for example when I am walking / doing stuff around the house and don't have my hands free to control a screen reader.

Does the extension work with things other than news sites? Reddit or blog posts, for example?
spacewalking [OP] 1 points 3y ago
It works really well for blog posts. As for reddit, it works well for the posting section, but comments are not supported yet. If this is a popular request, I'll implement it

where are the curated articles from? Are they updated/current news?
spacewalking [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Yes they are updated as the news appear and are from the top major publications around the world and they are the latest news. You can also search for whatever you want on the search box and pin search items so you can get regular updates on that topic. You will also get the best text to speech voice for the top 10 articles for free.

are you sure you’re not reinventing the wheel here? it sounds interesting. there’s always nfb news line I’ve heard of them and they do similar things. there’s so many read this page, or website, or article app that it’s honestly a bit of a satuated market.

is this an iphone app though?

Are these voices your own or google tts or something like that?

How would you say thiscompares to, say, Pocket? Leaving aside Pocket's accessibility issues.
