Basic Battle - Voice-First RPG for Alexa, Recently Updated (self.Blind)
submitted by Agonarchy
Hello All!

A little over a year ago, we launched an Alexa voice-first RPG called Basic Battle!

Basic Battle is a fantasy RPG with a unique setting, combat that is both quick and dangerous, and is designed to be voice-first. You can always ask how things feel, smell, look, and so on, and any information you need to play is provided by voice. We created this game specifically to be an example for other developers on how to build a game that everyone can play, so we greatly encourage and appreciate any feedback you have!

About a month ago, we released an update that added a bunch of new features, including character switching, fast travel, a new player profession - the stealthy Scout!, and an overall improved experience, including a lot of new sound effects for combat.

For 2020, the Basic Battle team is focusing on content updates, so there will be even more adventure to be had! We've got some twists in mind that we promise you aren't expecting!

If you have any questions or feedback, you can reach us at agonarchy@gmail.com.
To get started, you can try saying "Alexa, enable basic battle" or follow the link below:
$1

Basic Battle supports all of the English locales.

And a note to fellow developers: Please feel free to steal any of our design ideas! If some part of our game helps inspire you to build or improve a game for everyone, we'd love to hear about it. :)

Hi. Do you have plans to bring this to the Google home?
Agonarchy [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Hello! I'm afraid that we're only on Alexa at this time. We do hope that some Google Home developers can get some inspiration from the game, but we don't currently have the resources to support multiple voice services. If you know any Google Home developers looking for ideas, please feel free to share the game with them. The very best thing that could happen is for Basic Battle to get lots and lots of competition.

Thanks for sharing this. I started coding an implementation of a solo board game last week and I am nearly done with my initial playable build. Do you happen to have a blog where you talk about the technologies you have used and what the architecture of the code is like?

That's awesome! More games in the world means more joy in the world!

We're actually hoping to not only blog, but post the full code on GitHub at some point, but that's still in a pending stage due to a few moving targets we need to chase down. For the most part we just use Node.JS and a very simple structure to handle each component, and AWS stuff like Lambda, S3, and DynamoDB for the backend. We focused on one thing at a time instead of trying to add everything at once, and then refactored if things conflicted. First we built combat, then senses, then movement, then saves, then quests.

My background is more in Dungeons and Dragons than software, so the design works a lot like a simple spreadsheet, with a lot of arrays and objects passing data back and forth so everything is very human-understandable, and it wouldn't be too hard to play the game using dice and a bit of math.

Awesome, do you have a twitter profile or anything I similar so I can follow you and be notified when you post about the development?
Agonarchy [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Absolutely! You can follow us at $1.

I'll have to check it out. When I first started playing Alexa games, a lot of them fell wide of the mark as far as quality. That seems to be changing now though, with Starfinder being right up there as being the best experience I've had. So, it definitely can be done. Anyway good luck and I'll give it a try.

Thank you! It can be rough being an early adopter sometimes, but I think with all the new tools being introduced to the voice world we'll find more and more truly special titles. My bet is that the really incredible, innovative games will come out when the generation growing up with voice start getting into programming, but we can certainly lay a sturdy foundation for them in the mean time.

Sounds like a decently fun game I don’t know if I’d play it or play it a lot but actually sounds interesting.

Thanks! We all have our gaming preferences, but hopefully one game leads to another leads to more leads to too many games to count so everyone has plenty to play.
