Books with blind characters (self.Blind)
submitted by jemaj
I think that the most common question in this subreddit is from someone who is writing a book with a blind character. I seams to me that blindness is viewed by the general public as simultaneously fascinating and repellant.

So, what are some of your recommendations for book with excellent portrayals of blind characters?

This is something i’ve been wondering. Its so hard to find something that isnt super blinky with a superpower that makes the blindness a non issue or it reads like one of the disability hallmark type movies and gets so extra cutesy.

I have more, but these are recent favorites. I even wrote one once, but it's not currently up for sale

I personally really liked Notes on Blindness by John M. Hull. It’s also a very good movie.

Someone Like Me by Elaine Forrestal, it's a children's book. Only on the final page of the book do you find out that the main character and narrator is blind.

That's interesting, I'm a totally blind adult and when I was a very young kid like three or four my mom wrote a book with a similar story about although I was blind I was perfectly "normal" and liked all the same things other kids liked and needed.

The book had a page with different textures, a page with sound button, a page with scratch and sniff, and several pages about activities that I liked. It was all told by her blind son's perspective.

It never got published but we still have it somewhere.
