TVI Seeking Info from Older Adults (self.Blind)
submitted by changeneverhappens
Hi y'all! I'm a teacher for students with visual impairments and am currently working on my orientation and mobility certification. One of my assignments is to interview an older adult (60ish+), who lost their sight as an adult, about their orientation and mobility needs.

I work with my students every day but don't have the opportunity to meet or speak with very many adults. I know this sub is constantly bombarded with random proposals for inventions and weird surveys from random posters- I apologize if this request reads as one of those posts.

If you are near or a part of the age group and are adventitiously blind or visually impaired and would like to participate, please comment below and I'll message you! I can hold the interview over email or a google voice call-whatever works best for you.

Thank you!!

Out of curiosity, is this a requirement for ACVREP? When I got certified for that, we didn't have to do anything like that. But I had already been working in the field for 7 years by then, so maybe that is why they waived it.

Hello! I'm currently going through a graduate certification program before taking the ACVREP exam. This is part of an assignment for one of my classes. At least in my state, we can't work in the field as a COMS until our graduate program and internship hours are complete.

I'm from Canada, so there wasn't a certification process when I started. A few years ago, ACVREP wanted to try to do certification for other countries (Canada, Australia, etc) so we were used as guinea pigs for the certification exam. I had finished the program and my internship almost 10 years ago. Studying all that stuff was not easy (some big differences between textbook and real life). It was worse for some of my coworkers, who had not taken a test in almost two decades.

Wow! Yeah I work really closely with my COMS at work and am very lucky to be able to see how they work on a daily basis.
It's definitely not easy but I really enjoy this field and the people I work with, so it's worth it.

Yeah, some days it is rougher than others. -25 C weather or +35 C weather is not fun :P
