I’m definitely not the grammar police, but I too am blind, and I am perfectly capable of using punctuation. It’s really not that hard.
OutWestTexas10 points3y ago
Same here. Punctuation makes reading this forum so much easier.
DrillInstructorJan6 points3y ago
Yeah, me too. I learned to read print, so I know what it should look like, but the last thing any of us needs is to give anyone any more reasons to think we're strange.
CloudyBeep3 points3y ago
And surely OP learned at school, regardless of whether they read print or braille.

Dude, use punctuation...

If anything, punctuation and correct spelling make more of a difference to us than to sighties; especially those of us who use speech synthesis. People can of course be annoying about it, but it's worth trying to make an effort in learning and using the rules correctly. I hate it when my screen reader sounds like it's going to run out of air, for instance.
BlakeBlues11 points3y ago
+1 for punctuation.
Do you have access to a refreshable braille display?

AppleVis reports very few bugs relating to typing in the current version of iOS and iPadOS. Perhaps you need to receive training in how to better utilise the options available to you for editing text.
Laser_Lens_48 points3y ago
Honestly I'm not quite sure what you're complaining about. Punctuation isn't that difficult to insert without vision, and it's arguably even more important for screen reader users. I wouldn't expect perfect punctuation out of anyone but commas and full stops go a very long way.

Unless you have a disability that makes it difficult for you to add punctuation, yes. I use multiple operating systems and multiple screen readers on a daily basis. Between voice typing and comfortable keyboards I have no issues adding punctuation to what I type, even with no functional site for identifying stuff on a screen.
Access technology is super aggravating. It has a lot of failings and shortcomings. Being formally cited, I'm intimately aware of just how many shortcomings there are. I can tell you that adding punctuation to what you type is not one of them.

As someone who is not a great speller, I have never been called out here for my spelling. I try really hard to make sure my spelling is correct.
As a blind person, I think it is important to show myself in the best light I can. Most devices have some sort of spell checking, and I am able to use a braille display to help.

iOS provides many methods to insert text other than dictation: • three typing modes in VoiceOver
• VoiceOver handwriting mode
• VoiceOver Braille Screen Input (which is what I'm using to type this comment)
• the FlickType app
• a Bluetooth keyboard (these are quite inexpensive and undoubtedly a good investment if you use iOS for all your computing)
• And I believe there are other typing apps as well.
I don't consider blindness a valid excuse for spelling and punctuation errors. Even if you insist on using dictation, it is perfectly reasonable to expect you to speak punctuation when you wish for it to be inserted, and if you don't know the rules for punctuation I advise you to learn them.
It is sometimes said that a bad tradesman blames his tools. You have many amazing tools at your disposal, and I think you ought to learn to use them better. When you blame your blindness inadequate technology as the reason for your bad punctuation, you drag all blind people down because sighted people assume that we are all alike and thus all unable to write competently in a professional environment.

I agree w this. Especially in this sub. And you shouldn’t have to explain yourself every single time. Im not blind but i make mistakes in grammar. I misspell. And everyone else does too. People who are harassing you should be reported. They are assholes with nothing better to do w their lives. They are bitter and miserable. Try to ignore them. I know thats hard because it’s personal. Or say what you want to say to them. I would probably have some not so nice comebacks if i was you. Do you. Just don’t stress or give idiots too much power over you.

thank you I just blocked a few people even deleted my original question and people in this thread and unfollowed r/blind trying to explain i’m using old out of warranty cell and tablet the accessibility apps wont work right and even got attacked by other blind people I’m not sure i will even stay on reddit i’m on borrowed time with failing health I can’t do this

Hey u/BlindVegan I looked over your content and it looks like some quality stuff! I see you created this account not too long ago. I’m not sure if that means you are a long time lurker, or if you are new to reddit entirely, but let me explain a few things to hopefully get you out of the karma hole you are in. Reddit is one hundred percent grammar police. It used to be much worse than it is now. Heaven forbid somebody write the wrong word in the title of their post. You’ll see them ripped to pieces in the comments. Perhaps that is what is happening to you. There are no excuses, even for people who are blind. Second, I see a lot of your content is on YouTube. YouTube is a cesspool of hate. It has a lot of teenage trolls who only want to press buttons to watch people tick. Don’t feed the trolls. At any rate, punctuation is extremely important. It seems from your content that you are an intelligent, capable, independent woman with a lot to offer this community. Don’t give anyone any reason to think otherwise. Go through your post word by word (by using the rotor on iPhone then swiping up or down with one finger, swiping up or down with three fingers on Android, or Control plus right or left arrow on PC). Using dictation is a good way to write a majority of your information, but you still need to proof read. I bet if you proof read your posts you’ll see negative comments lessen, at least here on Reddit in the right subs. It’ll become second nature after awhile. At any rate, I’m glad you’re here and posting. Keep fighting the good fight!

Dictation alone won’t get you where you need to go. As everyone else is saying on here, grammar is important. Use that rotor to change navigation by words to fine tune what dictation isn’t picking up, or an external keyboard to type it out if you aren’t liking other methods of input. There are many ways to do it. What you have to say matters. Make sure you are presenting it in a way where people will listen.

You can insert commas and periods by saying them while dictating. For example, "See Spot run period." The speech recognition software will insert the symbol instead of the word.
80percentaccurate2 points3y ago
That’s the thing. I think everyone on this thread is explaining you do have control over this. I believe the discussion is quite civil. I’m sorry if you disagree.
ashleyd990 points3y ago
This is so annoying I was homeschooled during the third grade when I should have been learning basic spelling so now I cannot spell to save my life and these people make me want to cry there so mean
CloudyBeep3 points3y ago
I encourage you to read a lot in either print or braille, not audio. If you encounter words frequently, you'll hopefully learn how to spell them.
80percentaccurate2 points3y ago
I’m sorry to hear that, but it’s never too late. My little sister is dyslexic, so her spelling used to be just awful. When texting became a thing, she wanted to present herself well, so she was constantly asking people how to spell things. You wouldn’t be able to tell now that she can’t spell for shit if it’s a normal conversation. It’s more noticeable if she’s writing a paper or something, but she for sure overcame her spelling deficits. It’s just practice practice practice.

Most of the time it doesn't bother me but I'm living with more than just being blind I have not stopped hurting in 30 years and I am dying my hearts is giving out I was refused access transplant list because they know I would never survive the surgery on top of being in stage 4 kidney failure. Add severe childhood PTSD to the mix and there's times it does get to me i'm just glad just as with Twitter when people get nasty there asses can be reported and blocked
