Are you fully blind, legally blind or visually impaired?(self.Blind)
submitted by OpticNeuritis
Just curious. And what caused your vision loss?
and i get the term visually impaired can probably mean different things, im just saying is your vision in any way not 100 percent normal (pretty likely I suppose lol), and if so how bad.
I guess I'll start. Im visually impaired, formal diagnosis was optic neuritis but im not so sure. I have "blank areas" in my vision that sometimes look like black holes and everything around morphs into them, and sometimes I cant "see" black areas but I know they are there, its like my brain is ignoring them or something.
Ive been to a retina specialist, neuro opthamologist, opthamologist, brain surgeon etc. Only abnormal test was a VEP in my left eye. No signs of anything being wrong. Very bizzare. The visual effect looks like "macular holes" that I see examples of online. I guess im playing the waiting game and waiting for the physical damage of my mystery condition to show up.
Guess ill add, i also have nystagmus, amblyopia, floaters, light sensitivity, night blindness, afterimages, astigmatism, dry eyes and pretty frequent pain behind my eyes.

I use visually impaired. I’m blind in my left eye and I only have central vision in my right eye. What caused my impairment? A premature birth! I was born at 25 weeks weighing in at 14 ounces and 10.5/8 inches on 12/25/93 because my mothers kidneys were failing. I had to stay in the hospital for nearly five months. I came home on my mothers birthday on 4/19/94 weighing in at 3 pounds. She’s still alive to this very day! Praise God!

I’m legally blind, an autoimmune condition destroyed my optic nerves leaving me with 20% vision in my left eye and nothing in my right.
OpticNeuritis [OP]2 points3y ago
Which autoimmune disease?
KE5TR4L4 points3y ago
Sarcoidosis
OpticNeuritis [OP]2 points3y ago
Damn. Is it progressive? I have a lot of those symptoms, and the doctor said I may have an autoimmune disease but doesnt know which one (they did some kind of test).
KE5TR4L8 points3y ago
Only way to test for sarcoidosis is a biopsy, which sucks for the record.
And it can be for some people? There is very little known about it, and in my case I got it at 25 and by 27 it had run its course.
But also if you do have it the only treatment is to basically take two Advil and suck it the fuck up
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m legally blind due to oculocutanious albinism. The OCA causes things like nystagmus and astigmatism and also some areas of my eye aren’t fully formed. I also have a lazy eye and of course the main part of albinism is the light sensitivity.
I describe my sight as seeing a lot of things but not totally seeing those things. Things are blurry but in most cases my brain just registers it as not seeing it and tries to fill in the blanks of what it might be. Some people get confused when I see something but I explain that I’m not seeing it like they are and I just made a best guess. When I explain to people how I can’t see, I describe to them that I’m not able to see people’s faces and in most cases can’t discern if they have hands of feet even. I have better up close than distance but I still require large print and I like to read via audio. It frustrates me that reddit isn’t large font compatible on the iPhone.
rayact6 points3y ago
I am legally blind. The only way I tend to be able to explain it to people is that I just see much much blurrier than the average person. Then I show them things that they can see that I cannot. For example, I am unable to see my feet clearly while standing (I am 6'6") or this subreddit if my phone isn't lees than an inch from my face.
I have displaced lenses, ocular albinism, rod cone dystrophy, astigmatism, nystagmus, and glaucoma.
theawesomeaquarist6 points3y ago
Legally blind because of multiple conditions
AlmostBlindBitch3 points3y ago
Visually impared, if the surgery I am about to get does not go as planned I will be registering as legally blind.
dontwriteonme1 points3y ago
Best of luck on your surgery!!!
TheMonkeyGru3 points3y ago
I'm fully blind in my left eye, but over perfect vision in my right.
OpticNeuritis [OP]1 points3y ago
Whats that like? Does your brain still try to mix the images from the two eyes?
TheMonkeyGru2 points3y ago
So, it probably doesn't. I've been blind in that eye since birth some im fully used to it. Mostly just I have terrible depth perception. I also play VR so sometimes I can't see something I'm supposed to see in the game :p
ScarReincarnated3 points3y ago
Visually impaired. A tumor in the pituitary gland crushed my optic nerves.
BlakeBlues3 points3y ago
Legally blind from optic neuritis diagnosed at 3 yo
TK_Sleepytime3 points3y ago
I am legally blind. Born with cancer in both eyes. Right eye was removed and left was treated with radiation. The radiation caused a cataract and my lens was removed when i was 3. The radiation also caused chronic dry eye from lack of tears so my cornea is scarred. It varies day by day. Some days I get to work and am surprised by how close I had pulled the monitor the day before. Other days I'm wondering if the cleaning ladies pushed it back overnight. I'm very light sensitive without a lens and can only focus on the exact right spot of my glasses. Can't read street signs to save my life. But otherwise doing well and supporting myself and my crew of pets.
larougefemme2 points3y ago
I’m visually impaired. I have all but the amblyopia symptoms you have and reduced peripheral vision. I have retinitis pigmentosa.
OpticNeuritis [OP]1 points3y ago
Fuck. How long did that diagnosis take to get? Ive been to a retina specialist who was specifically looking for RP because I was worried about it and he didnt see it.
Is it possible i have it and just didnt show symptoms at that time? Im 23, btw. Symptoms started a year ago
larougefemme2 points3y ago
Hmm. I mean, RP can show up in so many different ways, but I started having symptoms when I was maybe 8, and it wasn’t caught until I was 19 when I had developed macular edema. Once they did all the different retinal tests and genetic testing it was confirmed. I also happen to see one of the best retinitis pigmentosa specialists, so that may have sped up diagnosing once they started looking at my retinas.
Onset of RP definitely varies a lot between individuals. I do think it’s odd that they didn’t see anything if they did any retinal exams. But I’m definitely not a doctor.
OpticNeuritis [OP]1 points3y ago
Yep odd for sure... Ill just give it time I guess. Something is definitely wrong and I'd imagine that I will eventually show some kind of physical symptoms. Hopefully its nothing too serious, but it just feels like something is REALLY wrong. I mean im fine with some blind spots, no biggie, hell I could even put up with a very narrow visual field (obviously not ideal), but fuck if I could put up with complete blindness.
codeplaysleep2 points3y ago
Legally blind due to ROP - born at 28wks. I've never had vision in my left eye. I have very central vision in my right and low visual acuity in that eye, as well. I also have pretty severe nystagmus. I'm pretty much night blind and don't handle glare/lights at night well at all. In general, though, I need a lot of ambient light to see to do things. I've also had 3 glaucoma surgeries, cataract surgery, and a couple other laser procedures here and there.

Depending on who I'm talking to, I'll say blind, visually impaired, or a low partial. I have just above light sensitivity, and the vast majority of what I see is just static with my brain vomitting out what it thinks things look like, which is fun when combined with Charles Bonnet syndrome. My hallucinations are people, especially demonic or scary looking people.
As my flair implies, my brain had a fit and caused my blindness. I have a condition called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension and it basically means that you have too much brain goo, and it can wreck your shit. My first symptoms were rapid onset vision loss, and my optic nerves are now severely atrophied.
MercySound2 points3y ago
I hope you will find a diagnosis soon! Not knowing has got to be difficult.
I have Choroideremia and legally blind. I've been slowly going blind since birth. I've got about 9% (mainly central) left in each eye, with night blindness. Genetic surgery is on the horizon but the late '30s is when it starts to hit hard. Here's to hoping and praying science prevails for all of us!
OpticNeuritis [OP]2 points3y ago
Thanks. Yeah, its been rather.... Mentally exhausting. Im not going to lie, its all i think about anymore. Im considering suicide if its progressive. You are all stronger than me, thats for damn sure.
MercySound2 points3y ago
I understand the pain. Alcohol nearly took my life 3 years ago. I decided to stay sober in hope of a better future. I hope I don't lose my remaining sight in the next few years. I hope I see a day with perfect vision again. I hope the same for you my friend. God speed.
OpticNeuritis [OP]2 points3y ago
God speed! Hoping they will find a cure to various causes of blindness in the near future!

I am legally blind. My BCVA exceeds 20/200. Basically, I can see the E at the top of the eye chart, but not much else.
My condition is a combination of acute myopia and cone dystrophy leading to Achromatopsia.
In layman’s terms, I am extremely near-sighted, partially color blind and my eyes don’t react well to light. So, yes, I wear my sunglasses at night. Especially when entering a grocery or convenience store with bright fluorescent lighting and all-white floors.
My eyes have always been bad. I’ve been in glasses since I was three years old.
I was diagnosed with cone dystrophy at age 12
I was diagnosed as legally blind at age 27
I am 44 now and my eyes are getting worse! Not that they were all that great to begin with, but I used to be able to read fine print at a 20/40 level without my glasses as long as I could pull the page right up to my face.
Now I find I am struggling to read small print and it is terrifying me!
OpticNeuritis [OP]1 points3y ago
Im sorry to hear that. I also have extreme myopia and im starting to seriously suspect either rod cone dystrophy or retinus pigmentosa.
Its funny, ive always had this fear of going blind. Like since i was 8 or 9 and my vision started getting worse from myopia. But ive always thought it was an irrational fear, as myopia cant cause blindness in the sense that you see nothing (ive always thought, atleast with myopia I will always be able to see SOMETHING).
Then, last year i start seeing areas of my vision dissapear. At first it was only with my right eye closed, then it got into my right eye.
So, I guess my fear wasnt that irrational. I have that native american blood afterall, lol. Its really twisted... Fuck
Only1lunatica1 points3y ago
I'm visually impaired ´, but only enough to be considered visually impaired and I can't move my eyes at all which actually impairs me.
however I've never felt like I belong in either the visually impaired world nor the "normal" sighted one.
oncenightvaler1 points3y ago
I am fully blind, I have light perception but I cannot even distinguish colours. I claim I have no useful vision.
x0skeleton1 points3y ago
I always say "legally blind." I have severely high myopia, astigmatism, and nystagmus. Due to the nystagmus, my best corrected vision is about 20/80. I tell people I'm "legally blind" bc I thought most people understood that "legally blind" means that even with correction, your best corrected vision is still not great. (I think technically legally blind means that best corrected is 20/200, but I know the general population doesn't know that.) But an annoying number of people still ask me, "Why don't you just wear glasses?" when I say "legally blind." In an ideal world, strangers would just mind their own business and not ask me why I'm looking so closely at my phone, but people suck.
OliverKennett1 points3y ago
Fully blind. Had a detached retina due to hemorrhage and from alergic reaction to penicillin then sympathetic opthalmia set in... The right eye was removed when I was 8, was fully blind at 18.
I guess everyone's experiences are different, different support groups, out looks on life, but for any who are losing sight, it sucks hard, but you can get through it. It took me a long while to adjust to 0 sight and the ways I could lead a full and rich life. My interests changed, my appreciation for what I do have rather than what I lack became important. I understand that anyone can feel low, defeated, that tomorrow is going to be as shit as today, but, for those who considering ending it all, it might not be, it might be better, it might be fucking wonderful. Hold on to that feeling of wanting to turn the next page, watch the next episode. I let my curiosity drive me from day to day and am grateful for my unique perspective on life because that's what makes me me. Stay cool, stay brave, stay beautiful. ,

I’m fully blind but can seee lights and reflections.
I was born this way.
Duriello1 points3y ago
Totally blind due to glaucoma since 2014.
futurephysician1 points3y ago
Visually impaired in my good eye with a pinhole visual field but visual acuity isn’t terrible (20/30).
In my bad eye, I’m legally blind. Because I can’t see contrast very well, my visual field is considered nonexistent and I don’t use the eye.
DrillInstructorJan1 points3y ago
Blind as hell. Hit by a car in May 1998, detached retinas. I can maybe see a little glow of purple light sometimes, it's so little I'm not even sure.
katherinerose891 points3y ago
Legally Blind. I have optic nerve hypoplasia. I'm pretty independent. I do not drive. Peripheral in my left eye is pretty bad. My glasses are almost pretty useless. I have nystagmus in both eyes. I think my right ("good eye") is 20/200 and my left eye is 20/400.

The Veteran's Affairs declared me legally blind as of May 2017, I believe it's cone-rod dystrophy. It is mildly impacted by my diabetes, even though my sugars are under control. ( Since it could be relevent. I am turning 35 in April )
Center of my vision is missing, but my brain being a derp tries to fill in that void and I could have easily gone for years not realizing the case prior to my diagnosis in 2017.
Believed to inherit it genetically from my father's side of family, he has crap vision ( that he is just now managing to get corrected mostly. He's 62, been wearing glasses since birth. ) and light sensitivity.
My sister and I both share the ailment, with her vision a lot more advanced in its loss given her 4 year age seniority on me. I use her often as a guage of what my vision will do.
Aside from light sensitivity and vision at center of my eyes gone, I have 20/225 in left eye and 20/360 in right. I often just close my right eye for being a bother and will likely get an eye patch.
I CANNOT see at all during the day outside without my amber colored sunglasses. I can function rather well when not facing the sun, while wearing my glasses. Not quite normal, but enough that a lot of people question how blind I really am. ( Until they watch my dumbass long enough. )
Only1lunatica1 points3y ago
My sight is only just bad enough to be considered visually impaired and I am incapable of moving my eyes around which actually impairs me yet I have never felt like I belong in either the visually impaired world or the normal sighted one
taversham1 points3y ago
Visually impaired. I was born with cataracts and the surgery to remove them when I was a baby left me almost completely blind in my left eye. As an adult, I developed Intracranial Hypertension (too much fluid in my skull, it puts pressure on the back of the eyes) which has caused damage to the optic nerve in my right eye.
CosmicBunny971 points3y ago
Who even knows? Lol... I’m completely blind in my left eye and have sight in my right eye. Currently can see hardly anything due to surgery, which is a slow healing process (thanks, retina). I don’t know if I’m considered legally blind or vision impaired though.
Numbers-wise I’ve jumped from 6/36 (my vision for most of my life. What you can see at 36 metres away, I could see at 6 metres away) and at its worst (a few months ago when my retina was detaching) 6/90 (that was a pain). I have retinopathy of prematurity which has also brought along glaucoma. Right now it’s awful. I’ve had to delay uni since I can hardly see, and I have to use a screen reader (VoiceOver).
FavouriteFandoms1 points3y ago
I am Visually Impaired. I usually say that I'm half-blind because my right eye actually works better than most normal eyes, to make up for my left eye with nerve damage. I have nerve damage all along my left side so I am also half-deaf plus some other stuff. My left eye is lazy, especially in the mornings. I can see out of my left eye, but only about 25% or something. When I close my right eye, my left eye can see, very poorly, but when I open my right eye, I can't see out of my left eye. When I close my right eye, my brain tries to combine what I'm seeing through both eyes, so it's the world, but with the black of my eyelid coming through it as well. It's hard to explain, it's like both of what my eyes are seeing are competing for what I see, so I see both switching, or at the same time.
OpticNeuritis [OP]2 points3y ago
I only get those "blind spots" i was talking about when i close my right eye

Holy fuck you just perfectly explained what im experiencing I just didnt really know how to put it into words
OpticNeuritis [OP]1 points3y ago
Nerve damage you say? from what?
FavouriteFandoms1 points3y ago
I caught my left arm in my mother's ribs while I was growing and until birth, so the doctors suggest. They don't actually know. My arm didn't develop properly and it spread up into my ear, eye, and brain. I'd rather not talk about the brain part but ask away on the other bits!
OpticNeuritis [OP]1 points3y ago
Thats all good (if u dont want to talk about it.)
A good bit of my frontal lobe is dead due to a prenatal stroke.
Anyway, not talking about your brain per se (like, specifically) but are we talking optic nerve damage or cortical blindness?
I just want to know because of how closely your description matches mine. Obviously, not the same cause, but I do have a good deal of traumatic brain injuries plus the prenatal stroke.
