Anyone has laptop/ipad stand recommendations for visually impaired people? (self.Blind)
submitted by noaimpara
Title basically

I am on the quest for a good laptop/ipad stand to make working easier. Like many other VIPs, I have to get my nose right up to my screen or my keyboard in order to see anything, but it gets really tiring and makes working a lot more painful than it needs to be.

I was thinking a stand could help to put the screen up to my face rather than me having to have my head down and that would maybe help with my posture!!

$1right now is already better than just using my electronics as is but it is still too low for me. I think a stand that goes almost vertical would be great. (Link goes to an image on imgur, image description : picture of my current laptop stand from a side view. My ipad is on the stand and it is raised to the max aka about 2 or 3 inches)

Some extra information that might be useful :

I am a college student, I use my laptop for studying and working and I use my ipad for my textbooks, planner, notebooks, required readings and all that good stuff.

The accessibility features I use are the window zoom and sometimes voiceover to read long texts, but I mostly stick to the zoom.

It would be cool for the stand to be available on amazon or at least easily accessible in europe!!

Thank you to anyone who can help or suggest something!

This isn’t really what you asked but for me, I try to switch to an external monitor whenever possible.. both at home and work I plug my laptop into a big monitor and use that.. also with my iPad when I’m trying to read music.. doesn’t help when you are on the go in the day but at home/work, it’s a lot better

I find external monitors even worse because I can’t sit properly :/ no matter how big the thing is i always need to be very close to the screen for my glasses to work

How about a desk mounted monitor arm? I have them both at home and at work. Both have a 27 inch monitor that I can place right in front of my face, allowing me to sit straight up and keep good posture.

That sound like it could work! That’s random but do you have an idea of how hard that would be to attache to a desk myself?

The ones I've used just have a clamp that I can put on the side or front of the desk. It does mean that certain desks work better than others though (like if the sides are enclosed, you have less options for mounting). I've managed to get around that though by basically just screwing it into the top of the desk.

Also, choose your monitor size carefully. If you go too big, it may make it harder to see things at the edges. For me, a 22-24" monitor seems about right but that all depends on your specific vision level.

I want to second the desk mounted monitor arm. My vision changes from day to day and it's great that I can move it closer and farther away as needed. Also it is easy to mount as long as you have access to the back of the desk (like no wall in the way) and there either is a lip around the desk (so, the back panel of the desk isn't flush with the back edge of the desk top). At least that's for the kinds of clamping systems I've seen.

Here is an example. Note I haven't tried this specific one and am not necessarily recommending it, it's just for example. I hope this link can open properly for you: $1

There are even arms that branch out to support two monitors from a single clamp. Great if you have the paper you are writing open on one screen and the research material on the other :)

It’s actually very easy. Most of these arms come with a screw down clamp that you can mount on the desk without tools.

Depends on what you're using it for. When I was using my iPad for watching things still I bought a gooseneck ipad holder thing. can put it up really close without holding it

I use my ipad for studying and writing mostly. I looked up the thing it looks pretty cool actually. Does it actually hold the weight of the ipad though?
