Driving with a night restriction (self.Blind)
submitted by fancytacotime
Does anyone here have an acuity that allows them to drive during the day but not at night, with or without biopics?

I’ll be getting my license for the first time in the next few months if all goes as planned and I was just curious if there is anyone else who has a day only license and is willing to speak towards transportation in the winter when it is darker longer and deciding when to drive to work in the morning or not.

Not me personally but I have a client who has night blindness. They can see well enough to drive in the day, but their vision gets substantially worse when I gets darker. Also in Canada, so the sun sets quite early in the winter as well.

He doesn't drive during the winter because it is harder for him to see (darker after work, and snow has some contrast issues). He does drive in the summer when there is more light out, although he has been saying it has been getting harder to drive as well.

Thanks!

Our bus routes are poor here and I just hate uber-ing, especially at night. The day time freedom will be wonderful. I’m 27 and have never been able to get a day license, but I anticipate feeling even more frustrated in some ways that I still will be unable to go to the evening doctors appointments I need to go to alone or after work events or anything like that. I may have to bite the bullet and use paratransit but it’s so unreliable and I’m generally the last patient and clinics close after I’m done.

A license will be life changing but I still feel trapped.

Paratransit isn't the best option, but that is better than no option at all. Some people can't afford Uber/Lyft, so that's what they have to use. I always advise people to try to plan ahead for paratransit, although that isn't always possible. Sometimes a single trip just eats up your day.

Ya, I’m really lucky to be able to afford ride shares.

I plan on going back for my MA and have to figure out how I’ll get to night classes (grad classes aren’t offered during the day). Do I live on campus as a 27 year old with 29 year olds? I think there is one bus that goes out to the campus. Do I find an apartment along the route? Campus is out on it’s own so ubering to/from is expensive especially on a grad student budget. Do I rely on the kindness of friends twice a week? It’s a tough call.

I work with volunteers and we’ve had several rely on paratransit and they’re always incredibly early because otherwise they’ll be incredibly late. I’m not sure I could do that with classes or doctors appointments when I work full time.

I’m at an acuity that doesn’t even have me at legal blindness so really my issues are minor. I navigate fine. I just use a 32” monitor and sit up front during presentations but I still haven’t figured out this night thing.

If you have a friend taking the same classes, it can be easier to bum a ride and share gas money. But that doesn't always come up, and you don't to rely on friends for too long. Unfortunately, campus living can also be expensive, so it comes down to what your budget can allow.

Yeah, that is the debate... 2 hours early, or 30 minutes late? What a choice.
