Macular Telangiectasia (MacTel) (self.Blind)
submitted by kingsheep812
My mom(57) has been complaining about her vision for the past few years saying everything has started to become more and more blurry and things have been harder to see. Initially the doctor told her it was Macular Degeneration, but they ran another tests with a specialist and they said that it's Macular Telangiectasia or MacTel for short. I read online and everywhere says that it leads to inevitable total blindness or legally blind unable drive or read, and that there is no known treatments or cure. Is there any way to prepare for this? Does anyone know if things get better or should she prepare for the worst? She's always had decent vision her whole life so my family is very worried since we've never encountered anything like this before. What should people that had never experienced loss of vision do? Any advice would help, I'm feeling completely helpless.

There are a few possible treatments, but your doctor will know which ones are more appropriate (laser photocoagulation, steroids and drugs such as Lucentis or Avastin).

If things are getting harder to see, she may want to start getting some rehabilitation training now. It would be easier to learn while she has some vision, and there are a variety of devices that can be used to enhance low vision.
