Hello! I am starting to teach braille on Tik Tok! Do you have any suggestions for topics what could be fun? (v.redd.it)

You should probably use something other than Tik Tok
BlakeBlues [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Why do you say that? I know the app isn't necessarily for any amount of lesson material necessarily
Heerreewego 6 points 3y ago
My thought to not use ticktock is it is run by the Chinese government and actively suppresses human right movements on the site. Even people who aren't actively endorse things like LGBTQIA+ are suppressed if they look the part.

The LGBTQ community on Tik Tok is large and has a strong presence. Some people have left, some have censored their words, and alone haven't changed at all because silencing the community will be damaging.

There are definitely issues with big Tik Tok as a user and in their policy growth

Oh, sorry. That is why I had read. I'm glad to hear it is better then how some people make it out to be but, I will still not use it. Best of luck with your followship!

Unless I'm mistaken, there's no tactile element to Tik Tik, which would make learning braille on it nearly impossible.

There is no tactile element with any internet braille. You can use Perky Duck, but sighted people will most likely read braille by sight, rather than by touch
KesagakeOK 5 points 3y ago
Well how many sighted people are out there looking for braille lessons? And even then, how many are going to Tik Tok for said lessons? As a sighted person with an interest in learning braille, Tik Tok is without a doubt the last platform I'd go to for lessons.

I assume it's for sighted learners like family members or TVIs to use as a supplement. OP may want to post on r/Braille as well.

Tik Tok isn't accessible. Even if it was, the company actively suppressed LGBT and disability-related content and that's enough for me to never touch the platform. Also, last I heard Tik Tok was generally for memes and music. Not exactly a bastion of educational content, much less something is niche as Braille.

The practically of their suppression is minimal. The LGBTQ community I have, the trans friends, lesbians, queer folk, and the community of blind and low vision users I have is strong. They are popular creators of content. There are huge masses of people with disabilities and who are queer with followings and popularity. That contact isn't suppressed. With all this, there are even teacher! A lot of language content, talk about hardships, and pedagogical discussion.

I think this is a great and fun idea. But please--- can you use another platform? Please, NOT TikTok!

I'm glad to see TikTok is looked down upon by others as well. If you use TikTok, it's almost like instant credibility loss.
BlakeBlues [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I get that people are cool with ragging on people who use Tik Tok, but I use it for the community. That is one of the only places where I interact with LGBT friends. I talk with and connect with other blind and low vision users. It is a space where we can do this. This exists regardless of corporate Chinese Tik Tok guidelines.

More power to you. I still think TikTok is beneath me.
