Blind beekeeping (self.Blind)
submitted by appollo2020
Hey folks!
Just wondering if anyone knows any blind beekeepers I can get in contact with. I’ve researched it and have found two big names, but, haven’t been able to contact either of them.
I am getting more involved with bees and know eventually will probably get a hive or two. It would be nice to be able to find another blind person that has experience with this to ask them some questions.
Thanks
Edit: in Central Texas if anyone knows anyone around here. But at this point any leads would be greatly appreciated

This is something I want to do. In my village we have a bee farm and another hobbyist. When I inquired about if I can do this without sight bothflatly said no it's too visual. Especially looking for parasites sickness and finding the queen. I would be interested in learning if it at all realistic a blind person can do this I would be happy!!

It definitely is! In Africa a blind man is actually running a school on how to become a blind beekeeper. In the states I know there’s at least one or two blind beekeepers, but, I can’t get in contact with them. I’m currently part of a beekeeping club and will be starting beehive inspections soon. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Also, if they’ve been beekeeping for long, ask them if they know about François Huber. Basically he’s one of the people that did some of the most major research into the meeting of bees as well as communication with in the colonies. Granted, he did have an assistant, but he was completely blind and this was in the 1700s
