I probably don't count as blind or visually impaired, but I am very grateful for accessibility tools right now. (self.Blind)

I apologize if I am using the wrong terminology. I have never been formally diagnosed or anything like that, which is why I felt the need to add the disclaimer.

I am having an ocular migraine right now and can only read text on my Mac when the screen is almost completely zoomed in. (They aren't actually painful.) It's probably one of the few things I can see clearly right now.

My migraines used to be really isolating. I couldn't go out at all for months because my bad balance during the daily migraines would make me bump into things and trip. But now I can read and use the internet most of the time. I'm so glad to have some access to my internet friends and things I enjoy. I still need help dealing with the times when it can't help me as well because of the onset of other visual issues, and I'm not sure what tools I can or should use. Nonetheless, I am just making a post because I just found out about this subreddit and am in an exceptionally good mood despite the migraine.

Sorry if this is a weird post. Feel free to delete it if it's inappropriate. Please let me know if I make any mistakes.

I’m so sorry that you have this issue - that must be very frustrating.
Something to keep in mind is that disabilities are not limited to lifelong blindness or visual impairment. They encompass issues that may be situational or even episodic, like yours. I am glad that zoom text helps you, and you should know that your ocular migraines do meet the definition of a “print disability” so, if you find you need access to reading materials that you can’t find digitally, or that you can find are not well-formatted, you are entitled to access services through the $1.

Thank you so much for the reading tip! Right now In the past I've mass downloaded books from my college's electronic library or obtained them through other means...

It sounds like the ocular migraines are impairing your vision, so I think you belong. What other visual symptoms do the migraines cause?
anthroplology [OP] 3 points 3y ago
They don't really hurt or affect my hearing at all, which is good.

Besides the vestibular migraines and the blurry vision, sometimes during the really bad migraines I get double-vision and lose a lot of my depth perception. So on top of not being able to locate objects easily, I also knock them over. I've found ways to adapt to doing little things like drinking from the cup beside my bed, but I need someone else to fill it.

Until my medicine kicks in, the symptoms only subside a bit when the room is very, very dark.

You count if you want to, but frankly who cares about counting. If it helps it helps, it's not like you're depriving anyone else.

Ocular migraine can result in temporary visual impairment or blindness. I know several people who have them and one who keeps a folding cane with her because she will lose all functional vision for up to an hour. Not helpful if she’s out running errands. (She doesn’t drive.)

That's a good idea, I might look into that. I don't drive anyway.

There's a very good app for ios to read stuff out loud. It's called voice dream reader. You can customize the voice, reading speed and much more. No idea about android apps.

I use an Android, but thanks, I'll keep it in mind!

You are absolutely in the right place and very much welcome x I also have frequent migraines - they seriously suck. I'm glad you've found accessibility tools helpful.

I was lucky with my previous guide dog - he naturally alerted about 15 minutes before a migraine hit. My current boy either doesn't notice or doesn't care. Still find him incredibly helpful for balance and orienting myself.

I’m in a somewhat similar boat in that I’ve got eyes that work well enough to not be a disability from a legal perspective. (Which I care nothing about — don’t need or want the label.)

My point is to say “welcome”. :)
