Is there an option to have my Apple Music playing at a lower volume than the VoiceOver voice? (self.Blind)
submitted by kelpangler
Hi there, I’ve found that audio ducking drives me a little nuts as I hear the sound fading in and out so often as I use VoiceOver. I’ve tried turning the option off but it’s difficult to hear either of them at the same time. I’ve also tried turning down the volume via the rotor but I realized that turns down the VoiceOver voice.

Is there an option to have Apple Music at a constant lower volume separate from VoiceOver?

Other than that, do you have tips around this? Thank you.

sadly not that i've found. My best strategy is to bluetooth to a speaker and maintain VO on the phone, but that loses much of the portability and privacy.

Well rats. We have music going on all the time at our house but I usually get outvoted by my kids lol.

On a side note, I’m curious if Apple employs any visually impaired people? Not really specific to this issue but in general. Are there blind people involved in the actual design and not just the testing? I hope there are.

Yes apple do as far as I know have at least one blind engineer, though I have no idea what team.

Hi there, as I understand it you need to have AirPlay enabled speaker, otherwise voice-over will not stay in your phone, it will switch to the Bluetooth speaker

If I connect to a speaker, I get voiceover from the phone and music from the speaker. I'm running a beta of iOS, but I'm pretty sure it's been the case for quite some time.

Another avenue is a braille display of course, you can mute speech intirely with one of those.

O worries! I’m glad you tried to give a solution anyway.

It would seem your only option is audio ducking. You'll just have to get used to it unfortunately. I can see why you'd want music at a constant lower volume though.

Some day our smartphones may very well replace laptops and tablets.

Yeah I’d like to have music playing in the background coffee shop style. The audio ducking is doable if that’s all I’ve got when I’m using my device privately. Otherwise I can have Alexa playing. Thanks.

The only option I can think of is Audio Ducking in Settings -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Audio on iOS 13.4.1. Enabling this option causes everything else to be quieter when VoiceOver is playing any kind of sound, including speech. This is enabled by default though, and for some quieter voices like Joana (the Portuguese (Portugal) voice) is not enough, but for Samantha (the English (US) voice) it's fine.

is that different from what I mentioned earlier? I e found audio ducking to be an annoyance. Are you talking about a different aspect that I could try? Thanks.

Sorry I completely missed that, not even sure how... Just ignore my comment.

Hi, on the music settings there is a section where we can turn on or off the music's volume limit. I was able to change the percentage but the volume of the music was not limited.

I don’t understand how the volume limit works. Is it supposed to limit how loud the music app will play? It seems to limit the general volume of the whole device.

hi, according to the settings its only for Apple Music. I'm going to call the company later on and ask this question.

Thanks. I hope you’ll come back and tell us what the results are.

Hi there, in stock iOS you cannot do this, you need to jailbreak, otherwise this isn't possible
 I hope this helps

Thanks for the info. I won’t go that route but good reference for others who might.
