A new keyboard for typing braille on Android(blog.google)

Depending on how well this works, I might be able to switch to Android some day. The braille input is the main reason I am still using an iPhone. Next time I upgrade my phone, maybe I will look at Android.

As many people are saying, this is one of the only reasons I pick up my iPad before my Android phone. I've just tried it out. It works really well, is nice and responsive. A little finicky in the translation department (more like older versions of iOS) but other than that, and the fact it teaches you to hold your phone in a **very** strange way (which actually works quite well and means you can type without a surface to put your device on), it's a huge step in the right direction.
If you wantto enable it, go toSettings >Accessibility > Talkback > Settings > Braille Keyboard. You'll also need to update to v8.2+ of the android accessibility suite.
Rocking this on Lineage OS 17.1 (Android 10) on a Xiaomi Pocophone f1.

I just got the update. This keyboard is a mindfuck. That's not a good thing.

Picture yourself holding a gamepad with the buttons facing the floor instead of you. That is how you must hold the phone; the screen faces away from you in a landscape orientation, and you grip it from either end. The dots are arranged along the short edges of the screen. You must swipe to input a space, new line, or delete a character. I think it would be possible to get used to this... if you have a small phone.

As a Galaxy s9+ owner and someone with fairly large hands and dainty fingers, I must fan out my fingers uncomfortably far. If I space them like I do on my Focus 40 or on my qwerty keyboard, Talkback almost always thinks I'm trying to type an H instead of an o. This is such an awkward position to hold my phone in. I can't use the same fingers to Braille and hold the phone's weight.

Beyond that, all Talkback gestures are disabled while the Braille keyboard is active, so if you want to move around the text to edit something or select a sentence to delete it, have fun putting away the keyboard first. I was expecting something like the system built into the Braillenote touch. I find it hard to believe that they got input from Braille users for this. I think I'll stick to voice typing.

I'm an Apple fanboy so can't provide a substantive reply. I do want Androids accessibility efforts to be better. Not treat it like it's a list of features, but tools even non disabled users can use.

I don't see any update for TalkBack. Here's hoping it gets pushed out to me soon. I really want to try this out

Thanks for posting this. I updated Talkback, and can see the talkback braille keyboard now, both in keyboard settings and talkback settings, however, i can not enable the keyboard. It is grayed out. Anyone else seeing this? I'm on a galixy S7. Looks like I'm sticking with soft braille keyboard for now. It works well for me, apart from spell check, which is the only reason I'm interested in Googles opction. no

Hi there certainly, the braille keyboard will help a lot of individuals, also it will fix the major typing delay which Android has, it isn't as polished as the iOS braille screen input.
