I got mine just under a year after my daughter was born. it made travel around town so much faster and more ... comfortable? I suppose is the best term. I could take my attention from the route for minutes at a time, talk to my daughter whilst carrying her, with reassurance that I wouldn't stumble off a path or meet a bodyhigh obsticle. On our very first walk as a 3, my daughter had fallen asleep, and the dog refused to walk on because something would have come into contact with her carrier. So that was pretty special and impressive.

in terms of work, I have not needed a guide dog for my job - I work in the same building day in, day out, and am not within walking distance of the office from home.

We now live in a smaller place and I find myself finding reasons to go work the dog rather than needing him to work for me, so i won't be getting another while we live here: but for the last 7, 8 years or so he's been an invaluable companion and a very welcome addition to the family.

Canes are obstacle finders and guide dogs are obstacle avoiders

You are elligible if you have little enough vision that you will put full trust in the dog. For example, if you're walking and need to go either left or right to avoid an obstacle, you have to let the dog make the decision; this is what makes people with more vision less likely to be candidates for a guide dog.
