So I've been thinking for awhile about flairs, and how they are used here. You may notice I took the rebel approach and decided to not put my cause of blindness in my flare, rather I put my profession.
To me, I'm not defined by the amount of sight that I have, and don't wish to judge others based on this fact. Many blind people will tell about the class system that sometimes develops at schools, camps, and training centers, where the higher partials are seen as above the low partials. I've heard it called the hierarchy of sight. Put another way, I'm curious what the group thinks now about the use of flair here, and if the current approach is still what is preferred? Obviously the rules are loose around flair here, since I have not seen anyone admonished for expressing what they would like in that box. But this was instituted here over 4 years ago, so perhaps it's time to revisit. Perhaps it just becomes a spot for people to put a tagline of their choosing.
TL;DR: Is visual acuity in flair still a good idea, or is there a better alternative?

I mostly ignore flair here. I think it probably helps people find others who are similarly diagnosed, but as someone who has been the same version of blind my whole life that's not important to me. I like the idea of your occupation as flair but I wouldn't want those on disability to feel shamed for not having a career. I would like to see flair that is open to whatever - career, interests, diagnosis - whatever has most meaning at the moment.

I'm not particularly militant about this, maybe just on the basis that I never went to any training courses that had other blind people on them (at least not for more than about five minutes until I realised how crap they were.) Also I will lose any comparison like that as I can't even tell if it's daylight. I didn't put the flair in simply because I don't really want the second thing people know about me to be that. There's no problem talking about it. I lost my sight in a car accident at the age of 19 in 1998, it's a concussion injury. It's about as much fun as it sounds but it's ancient history, I got over it and I wish everyone else would also get over it. I wouldn't necessarily choose to open a conversation with it though.

I'm completely blind, jobless, and very dependent thus belonging to the lowest echelons of the blind society no matter how you classify it, which is funny because I used to be the total opposite with sight. The good thing is that I really don't care, because I don't have an inferiority complex now just like I never had a superiority complex before, and don't really mind my situation as long as disability money continues to flow into my bank account every month and I can keep coding for entertainment.
Unlike you I do think that blindness defines me, as I've become a completely different person due to having gone blind.

Pick your class system, honestly. Do you want sight-based, or employment-based? I've seen a lot of people who would put an employed blind person above an unemployed one, and don't agree with that either.
I don't care what you choose as your flair choice. They're meaningless most of the time anyway. It's a blindness sub, so my flair is the cause of my blindness. That's really all the thought I put into it until I saw this thread. And probably all the thought I put into it after I post this.

Yup I'm in agreement with you really. The only reason I brought it up is because that's what is suggested as the flair on this forum. I recognize that everyone's situation is different, and I think it may be worthwhile rewriting that page to encourage people to do whatever they well please with it. But do I care a lot in the long-run? Nope.
