submitted by theawesomeaquarist
I know theres sight impaired and serverly sight impaired

Did the system change because didnt it used to be partially sighted and blind?

Also certain sites eg rnib have serverly sight impaired and beside in brackets blind

And some other uk sites use partially sighted and blind

Im just confused?

On the CVI it is Written as Sight Impaired and Severely Sight Impaired (Blind) so the Blind is in brackets on the Severely Sight Impaired. So if you are within a certain range on the Snellen chart it is SI and and Worse vision than that is SSI (Blind)

Why is blind in brackets

Blind is not someone who cannot see anything. Blind is referred to someone with very Low Visual acuity, low Acuity and reduced field of vision, or Severely reduce field of vision. So Blind is another way of saying you are SSI. You can read up on the UK CVI on the RNIB website if needed they have a lot of useful info.

The system did indeed change. I was registered back in the days when I received the label blind. Changed over to ssi now. A lot of people in the community still use the old labels and language. I assume, mainly due to public perception. Blind conveys easier than ssi to someone outside the community

I was registered on old system but am moving up to ssi cant find any articles or info when it changed
