I’m only half blind. Can I still be here?(self.Blind)
submitted by CoyoteDreemurr
I actually had no idea I couldn’t see good until I was a teenager. After I failed my drivers eye test, it really hit me that I couldn’t see. Even after my first REAL eye test I thought I was still fine. Now I’m almost 16 and I see 20/100 without my glasses. I never thought in a million years I’d be wearing them this much, and this young. I can’t believe I had no idea either. I can get around just fine without them, some things are just blurry, like clocks and screens.

Say that louder. We're all blind in here!

Welcome. Curious-- what is your best corrected visual acuity with glasses? Do they help a lot?
CoyoteDreemurr [OP]1 points3y ago
I’m 20/20 with my glasses. They help a ton.

So....you are not blind. At all. You have a refractive vision error and you never had an eye exam to catch it as a child.
I'm an ophthalmologist and it really really annoys me when people who just need glasses tell me they are blind. You aren't blind! You're nearsighted (most likely based on your story) and are 20/20 with glasses.
Without my glasses I'm 20/800 but with my glasses I'm 20/20. I'm not blind or visually impaired because my vision is correctable to 20/20.
Please make sure if you know any parents to tell them to get their kids eyes examined so the kids don't have to find out at the dmv that they can't see well. And stop saying you are blind. You are not. You have normal vision.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!! 20/20 WITH glasses? OMG, I'm legally blind, with best corrected vision/glasses. I am seeing 20/200 and 20/400 WITH glasses. You seeing 20/20 is purely maddening to most of us, I think. I'm sorry honey, and I know this is going to come off as rude, but I feel, and maybe others feel this way too, that you really don't *fit* in our group here. I can't speak for others..... but it kind of insults me a bit. Are you SURE you are 20/20 WITH glasses????? HOW did you not pass your eye exam for your driving license, then??? Geez, I know I sound like a real jerk right now, but come on........ 20/20???? Did you mean 20/200, perhaps???? If you are 20/20 with glasses, my dear, you are NOT half blind. You are lucky! You are fortunate!! You are in such a better position then most of us here, since we are either legally blind, totally blind, or in the process of losing most/all of our eyesight! Slap me if I'm wrong!!!

It sounds like op wasn't aware of the fact they needed glasses before going to the DMV. Now they have seen an opthalmologist and got glasses to correct the vision they should be fine to go back to get the drivers license.
OP should not be claiming they are blind as they have correctable vision.
blackberrybunny2 points3y ago
That is what I am thinking. If your worst vision can be corrected with glasses or contacts, and you are no longer considered 'legally blind,' then you shouldn't claim you are blind. It peeves me. Same as when skinny girls claim they are fat and need to go on a diet. GRRR!
CloudyBeep2 points3y ago
I don't think OP meant 20/200 because in the post it says that they are 20/100 without them.
CloudyBeep1 points3y ago
Did an ophthalmologist or other health-care worker tell you that you have a vision impairment, or did you just assume that you are because you need glasses? As your vision is fully correctable, you would not be considered to have a visual impairment in most countries.
CoyoteDreemurr [OP]0 points3y ago
I’ve been told I need them by eye specialists.
obex_1_kenobex4 points3y ago
Needing glasses to see well is very normal. You are not blind or visually impaired. You have normal vision. You should get a dilated eye exam every 1-3 years to make sure your eyes are healthy. Needing glasses is not a sign of poor eye health, that is a common misconception.
CloudyBeep3 points3y ago
I'm not disputing that you need them; I'm disputing your claim that you are blind because your visual acuity does not make you blind under the definitions of visual impairment in many countries.
CosmicBunny975 points3y ago
Of course :D Welcome!
TheRedColorQueen3 points3y ago
Yes you can. I’m slowly going blind in my good eye. I’m fully blind in. My left eye and I am freaking out on the inside I’m trying to be calm.
mkhowie2 points3y ago
I wish you good vibes and a calming presence.

Thanks ❤️

I’m not blind and I don’t even known anyone who’s blind. I’m here because I want to learn more about what it’s like being blind in today’s society.
I love hearing about stuff like new technology being developed and integrated into public spaces for people who’re physically impaired in some way, because I think it’s so important that those with disabilities are able to access as much as possible, so they can be as independent as possible in their day-to-day lives.
Hope the tone of that didn’t come across as extremely patronising
CloudyBeep2 points3y ago
It doesn't.

I’m only half blind too. Technically legally blind but with a lot of usable vision compared to other VI peers.
They haven’t banned me yet!
