When I was in elementary school, I received a braille note apex to do my schoolwork on. If you’re familiar with the braille note apex, you’ll know that you can play text adventure games on it, and came with about eight games pre-installed. i played each and every one of them, sometimes during class when I was supposed to be working. I beat every one of them, except for two, which I tried to win until i got my braille note touch. So I decided to try again since i have so much spare time, so I can honestly say i beat every pre-installed game on the braille note apex. I’m starting with Curses, wish me luck!

I miss those old text adventure games. I had an Apex in high school and college. Somehow it got lost after college. I've been wanting a new one, but also figured it'd be easier to just get a brl display for my iPhone.

I've been playing them on my iPad. I started on the web but goofed up during the hedgemaze so I'm moving to Frotz so I can save and restore. Got a feeling I'll be doing that a lot ...

I have seen some text adventure games on the App Store.

Curses is absolutely screwed lmao. I tried playing that game and gave up halfway through because I couldn’t figure out how to get the stupid key out of the hole in the wall
BlindWarriorGurl [OP]2 points3y ago
You use the robot mouse. Tell it to go west into the hole, by typing mouse, go west or something similar. Then you have to talk to the hole e.g. hole, go west. Say west to the hole twice, then north, then west again, then north one more time, then south, east, south again then east three more times. I had to consult a walkthrough to figure that out and did it so many times I memorized the directions. It's the mazes I'm stuck on now

I've definitely played a few on iOS. It's been a while though.

The only game I did much with was one with masks. I don't remember the name...I
BlindWarriorGurl [OP]3 points3y ago
The Dreamhold. That one gave me a little trouble in the end, had to write some stuff down to solve the final puzzle. It was pretty clever though so I won't complain.

When I was playing I didn't know how to use the computer very well. Now that I primarily use a computer I will check if I can download more text based games. There is supposed to be more of them that are playable.
BlindWarriorGurl [OP]1 points3y ago
There are tons! I recommend visiting IFDB, it's basically an archive of interactive fiction on the web.

That sounds awesome! I know what a Braille Note Apex is, but the braille note touch is new to me. So I'm afraid I don't know anything about either, or the games you are referring to. I have some sight, so I don't use Braille that often. I learned how to use a slate and stylus, long ago.
Just curious-- which braille note do you find easier to use? Which one do you prefer?
BlindWarriorGurl [OP]5 points3y ago
The braille note touch is basically what if Keysoft And Android had a baby. Why they didn't team up with Apple who's the lead in accessibility on mobile right now is beyond me, but yeah if it's not obvious already I prefer the braille note apex. Sure the touch has more features but it's glitchy as all heck, the charging cord and port are very poorly made, and I'm just not a big fan of android or talkback, found it too complicated to learn.
Laser_Lens_43 points3y ago
I got the chance to try out a braillenote touch a while back. It was running Android KitKat which was already outdated when it was first released. It doesn't appear to run TalkBack, rather it's running key soft on top of Android. Braille is great, since it's not using the garbage Brailleback. I think there's a new version of the unit which has beefed up internals and runs Android Oreo... Which is also already outdated but not as horrible as the first model.
I love love love the design of the braillenote apex. Why they abandoned the aluminium mid-frame with flat black steel in exchange for pure plastic is beyond me. I was very disappointed when I first felt the braillenote touch. Brailling on the touch-screen is top-notch though. It's fantastic, so at least humanware managed to get what matters right. I think I would prefer the braillenote touch over the braillenote apex simply because it's running an operating system that's still supported. Microsoft drop support for Windows CE in 2018.
As for Apple, well the reasons there are obvious. Apple only puts their software onto their own hardware. Closest thing you can get to an Apple braille note taker is an iPhone or iPad with a braille display. I'd suggest a MacBook air which is a little more versatile but braille support on Mac OS is complete and utter garbage.

I think they should have built the keysoft layer to go on top of android so that you could technically update it without ruining the device. Maybe there are reasons it could not have been done that way, perhaps the had to embed stuff low level in the OS. Either way, this is why I don't like notetakers.

The BrailleNote Touch has a large screen on which you can type braille. It has a keyboard cover, and when you place the cover on the device it looks similar to the Apex.
blackberrybunny2 points3y ago
Ahhh, a keyboard cover. So that is how this works. Clever!
BlindWarriorGurl [OP]2 points3y ago
My touch tends to get confused about the cover, thinking it's on when it's off and vise versa. It's really annoying.

OK well for some weird reason I can’t reply to that comment. But, surprisingly mazes was the easiest one to get through. Honestly it took a lot of me saving the game at different points to get through. Also, if you wanna good past time game, Timecrest is wonderful and the storyline is just so good and the main character isn’t just a hollow shell and sometimes, despite the fact that you tell her to do something, she’ll make her own decisions. It’s an iOS game and I think it’s a great game to pass the time
BlindWarriorGurl [OP]2 points3y ago
Already been playing for a long time now and the new soundtrack is really cool. Pretty much all the main characters have a themesong now, something I'm a complete sucker for.
