I'm a Sixth Form DT student and would love your input! (self.Blind)
submitted by jaimevannr
I would love to receive input from the visually impaired community on my final design project. My initial aim is to find a problem which many people in the community face and then create several solutions before developing and making a final one. This process will involve a lot of one-on-one and group collaboration, and it would be incredible for your help. In these difficult and arguably boring times, if you would like to get involved in my project, please let me know.
Also, I would like to ensure that this project will not be a waste of your time. I received full marks in my GCSE DT project looking at problems that young people with autism face in education and aim to execute this project with the same quality.

If you are interested and would like to know more about the project, me or my past work, please contact me at $1

Thank you!

There seem to be so many people trying solve problems for the blind, but I don't know many problems that we have that can be solved. Check out all of the electronic canes, vests, gps units, and other navigation aids for examples of sighted people trying to solve blind people's problems. As long as this isn't your goal, I think it can be done. Good luck on your study!

For my GCSE DT project, I made a keyboard stand that allowed you to place a regular text keyboard above a braille display, in such a way that you could read the braille display while the keyboard was ontop of it. If you wanted to use the braille keyboard, you could then flip the top back, place the text keyboard on the now upside-down top flap and use the braille keyboard. The idea was to save space on a desk by vertically stacking the objects. This was made a lot easier, however, by the fact I own a BrailleNote Apex and used a school-provided BrailleNote Touch at the time, so I could take measurements and actually try out the design.

It's these kinds of lines I think you should be thinking on. Something that solves a real problem. During your design you'll be focusing a lot on tactile design and perception, as well as using high-contrast colours. But I assume you knew that going into this. From a 17 year old, year 12, blind CompScie, Maths and Physics student, good luck.
