Playing D&D 5e blind help (self.Blind)
submitted by Laser_Lens_4
Recently, some friends and I have gotten into D&D. It's been a lot of fun, but I can't do much of anything myself. My friends have graciously helped me with my character sheet and they even do dice rools for me, and as a result I've felt like a drag on the group. I've had mixed success with sites like DndBeyond and Roll20. Neither are fun to navigate with a screen reader. We've worked around the dice roll problem with a D&D helper bot called Avrae on Discord, which we plan on fully using on our next session since it can import character sheets. That leaves the making of said character sheets. Everything I've found has ranged from "tedious" to "insultingly inaccessible". The PDF sheets are particularly bad. I found an Excel version of a character sheet which might work, but there's some 700 or so stat fields, many of which I don't know how to properly fill out on my own. That leads me to my questions.

1. Is there somewhere I can get an accessible version of the D&D 5th edition rule book?
2. 2.Are there accessible character sheets I can get somewhere, or is a spreadsheet my best choice?
3. $1
$1 you have other tips and advice for playing D&D totally blind?
4. 4. Are there any good 5th edition character creation guides specifically for someone without sight?

Thank you for any help.

I can’t speak for dice rolls or where to play, but Knights of the Braille have an accessible character sheet if you haven’t used them before :) It’s very different from the original character sheet though, but I don’t see why your friends wouldn’t understand.

This . Definitely get in touch with those guys and they should help you out with all the questions you might have.

They’re a great resource imo. They also have a DDiscord server too, though I haven’t joined (I want to).

Yup, they've got accessible materials right there on their site.

Thank you thank you thank you. This is it. These guys have what I need. They've even got a free PDF of the handbook. It's incomplete, but still. The MS Word character sheet is so easy to move around.

Still don't know about dice. Rolling on Discord is a little tedious and asking Google is also annoying and breaks immersion. I've heard about Braille d20s but they're rather large. I'm sure I'll figure something out. DM does a lot of the rolling anyway.

They recommend buying the handbook from Dndbeyond. I'm hoping it's more accessible than their site.

Hi leo!

i am a nearly fully blind twitch streamer and me and my friends who are all sighted decided to try dnd! some ideas we had was having a character sheet converted to word because word is easier to read than a pdf. what you could also do is having a friend or the Dungeon master control your sheet itself so you don\`t need to worry about it and can focus on the fun side and imagine the character but dont need to worry about the sheet you can still choose what goes on it just dont need to worry about not seeing it.

for dice rolls its quite fun and my friends do it and they have sight is just to use alexa or siri and just say hey siri roll a d20 and it will do it for you.

let me know if you need any advice i might not be able to help but i will try!
