Gallant Hearts Guide Dogs (self.Blind)
submitted by 322lancer
Has anybody had any experience with Gallant Dogs? I was doing my research and looking into potential guide dog schools and came across their website. I know for a fact they're not as well-known as schools like The Seeing Eye or Guide Dog Foundation, but I just wanted to ask and see if anyone could attest to their credibility as a potential school.

I just looked them up because I had never heard of them before. The fact that they aren’t members of the International Guide Dog Federation is scary. Therapy dog certifications mean nothing unless you want to take your dog to a place like a nursing home or hospital to help other people. The fact that this organization is bragging that their dogs can pass this test is not relevant to safe guide work.
This could just be a new organization that is taking some time getting on their feet, but this is your safety we are talking about. Make sure you are comfortable with the level of training these dogs are getting, esp in the area of intelligent disobedience.

OK, thank you. I’m thinking I’m just going to stick with leader dogs. What you’re saying makes a lot of sense and I don’t know if I’m willing to put my Life in uncertain hands

Well certainly send them an email and ask some questions. I’ve got strong opinions about service dog schools. In college I interned at an organization in Tennessee that turned out to be just terrible. It really shaped what I think of organizations that don’t have credentials.
They might be on the up and up, but I would want to see their training methods and what additional tests the dogs need to pass.
I love Leader Dog. I don’t love their puppy raising program compared to other schools and I think they have a few headstrong lines, but overall they are there for you if you need them and the training is high quality.

Guide Dogs for the Blind is great. They have a few different program options, and a great vet support program for alumni. Certainly worth the consideration.

I know one person who has had a guide dog from that school. I didn't realize they were still around. She had a wonderful dog, a fabulous guide and a great relationship after graduation from there. But, she's the only one I've ever heard of even graduating from there.
