How do you decide on reducing clutter now that you’re blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by kelpangler
With the quarantine I’ve been cleaning the tool shed. There are some items that I don’t think I’d ever use again because my sight isn’t good enough. For example, I’m not a gear head but I’d occasionally fix up things on my truck. Wrenches, oil change tools, sockets, etc. there are also things around the house that I wouldn’t use.

How did you decide to get rid of things you once could use? I’m feeling overwhelmed at this point. I think I need to simplify to help me find things better but I’m afraid I’ll get rid of something I might learn to use later.

I currently attend the Colorado center for the blind, where a lot of the skills you talk about not knowing how to do, are touched upon and worked on. If you'd like, I can give you the phone number of the director. Her name is Julie Deden, and she is a wonderful director. However, you can also try the louisiana center for the blind, which I believe is NFB effiliated. Blind INC in minisota is also another one. I am possitive that you could find all three on google, but if you'd like some help, please let me know and I will do my best to help.

I'm in Colorado too and am interested in blind training. I have Stargardt's which is a progressive condition that causes legal blindness. My acuity is still good now but my sensitivity to light limits me substantially. Can you tell me when it's appropriate to seek training?

Well, I can't specifically tell you, but I can put you in contact with the director if you'd like. I can give you her email and phone number. Would you mind pm ing me your name so I can tell her?

For tools I wouldn’t focus on discarding unless it’s an obvious safety risk to relearn how to use safety. For wrenches, you can easily practice overtime until you find a way that works for you. The light thing that tells you if a wire is live—probably look around and see if there’s one that has an audio or vibration alert.

Between my father’s shop and my own we’ve found “clutter” just means disorganized.

Go to a rehab center and learn stuff much quicker than at home little by little. Look for LCB or CCB.

What do lcb and ccb mean? Thanks!

Hi, these are the best rehab training centers in the US. Louisiana Center for the Blind and Colorado Center for the Blind. I went there for 6 months and worked on my independence through quite a bit of training. I chose to do this rather than waiting at home to get training week by week for an extensive amount of time.

You lived there for six months? What does it cost?

i'm from Texas. The rehab program paid for my training. WE have the right to an informed choice, Texas has a rehab center, but after doing my research I determined that LCB would be better for my training. I recommend you search for the centers on Google and contact the dirrectors, as they would be more than glad to help answer all your questions.
