What would I need?? (self.Blind)
submitted by 4247420
For many years since my teens I've always wanted to own, live and travel on my own sailboat. Mostly to travel on a tiny budget.

This year I'm taking it a bit more seriously and started reading and started learning the basics and fundamentals.

I've heard of other blind people sailing while uncommon on open seas, it's not unheard of.

Are there any blind sailors who could give me advice, guidance or what would I need in terms of training or equipment to bring this to reality??

I am not blind, but I do sail. First and foremost I cannot recommend classes enough. It is increasingly important to learn under the tutelage of an experienced sailor. Even for the sighted it’s so important to learn your basics, the coastguard has to deal with water rescue constantly from people who don’t know how to sail.

What kind of sailing are you planning? Gonna stick to the coast or head to the Channel? Deep water? Gotta boat in mind?

I want a ocean crossing liveaboard. I'm not saying I'll go lengthy distances. Just enough to travel and live cheaply.

Ah, In that case look into the Merchant Navy. Those certs are gold when looking for a liveaboard, and you’ll earn money and experience in deep waters. I’m not learned in the requirements, but I’d point you in that direction if you are serious about a life on the seas.

They'll accept me even though I I'm blind?
