App to Help Visually Impaired Patients (self.Blind)
submitted by ayaanzhaque
Hey everyone! A couple of friends have made an app called Tickbird, which allows visually impaired patients to aurally understand their prescriptions and medicine bottle labels simply by taking pictures of them. If you or anyone you know anyone that could use this app, please recommend it - it's completely free! We also suggest everyone regardless of whether you are visually impaired or not to download it and try it out - we would always appreciate feedback from anyone.

The app is currently available at $1

And our website is here: $1

I don't want to ruin your enthusiasm, because as a developer myself I can understand the frustration of working on something that other people don't find useful. In any case, how does this app differ from Seeing AI, for example, which seems to offer a lot more and is also free?
ayaanzhaque [OP] 1 points 3y ago
From what I know, Seeing AI doesn’t actually read text and save it, as maybe I’m wrong but I have read that it only explains what certain objects are, not actually analyzing labels. Also, we save the prescriptions which means the user doesn’t have to scan every time they need to remember their prescription. Hope that answers your question! Feel free to address anymore concerns!

Seeing AI doesn't save text, but the Notes app that comes with the iDevice allows you to scan and save documents in plain text.

Oh, interesting. Haven't tried it yet, but have you reached out to anyone from ScripTalk or any nearby ophthalmologists? When I asked for accessible prescriptions, my pharmacy sent one of those. It's huge, clunky, and I've used it maybe twice (I tend to differentiate my medications by sound/feel, since luckily they feel pretty different). Seems like this could be a good alternative.

Hi! So first we haven’t reached out to any ophthalmologists yet because we are very new on the App Store and also because of the current Corona Virus, which is making all doctors busy. From our research, we found that only about 2% of pharmacies and doctors I believe offer Braille or audible prescriptions, so this is a great alternative. I would recommend you try it!

Is this available in other languages too? I’m thinking of a large population in my area who speak French. Currently we have a translator with us during the prescribing appointment, but this would help with reminding! Also useful for Spanish (same issue).

Hi! It is currently not in other languages but if more people want it to be in French or Spanish, we could definitely make it happen. However, since it does work with Apple accessibility, some features will be in your language. Also, since it scans the text, if the text is in French, it probably will read in French. So it should work and be of use regardless!

So after you take a picture then what?
ayaanzhaque [OP] 1 points 3y ago
After you take a picture it starts verbally reading out the instructions, or if you are scanning a medicine label it reads that as well. Furthermore, it saves the audio and you can play it again when you need the instructions again. You should download and try it out for yourself to get the full experience!
