Desolate for Alexa - my second solo board game adaptation (self.Blind)
submitted by ErtaySh
Hey everyone,

A little while ago I shared my Dungeon Roll Alexa adaptation on the sub, which had a positive reaction, so here's another game that I completed a few days ago.

If you haven't heard about the game, $1 is a solo-play card and dice game. You have many choices that will ultimately equate to your survival or your demise. Do you explore the first room you reveal, or press-your-luck and skip it to move on to another, and be forced to resolve the second? When you encounter an alien you must decide how much ammo you want to spend (Each ammo equals 1 die roll) in order to defeat it. Do you over-spend for a certain victory, or take a chance a spend less? When you defeat a foe and open a crate, do you take the larger more valuable resource, or the lesser valued resource that may be more useful now? Do you use a powerful one-use item early on in the game, or wait? Desolate is designed by Jason Glover, and published by Grey Gnome Games.

The main accessibility challenges with the game is that the most important information in the game is on the cards, and if you do not modify the cards, or apply Braille to them, the game is unplayable for the blind. I have used OCR for other games to read cards, but since the cards mostly convey information with illustrations or symbols, the OCR approach does not work here. So, if you don't want to modify your cards, or just simply can't read Braille like me, the other alternative is having someone sighted to help with the cards. Luckily, the games mechanics are quite simple, so this sighted person can easily be replaced by Alexa. Plus, Alexa is always available and doesn't complain when you want to play 'one more game before going to bed'!

You can play the game for free by saying "Alexa, open Desolate Board Game". If you're having trouble launching the game, you can try enabling it first from $1.
