video interview: Every Way Being Blind Makes My Life Different (featuring blind YouTuber Molly Burke) (youtube.com)

Molly isn’t a favorite of mine. She is a bit of a quiet hypocrite who never leaves home alone without her assistant (for vision) even though she has a guide dog (or had one). She makes certain ordinary things people who are blind do daily seem extraordinary so people will watch her videos. I think she has too much sway over the public’s opinion on blindness and it’s not in the favor of those who are blind, typically.

I don’t think that is particularly fair to Molly. I believe she travels a substantial amount, and often to new places. I don’t think it would be reasonable for a young, petite, entirely blind woman to travel by herself to new places often. I think it’s prudent to send a companion with any young female, irrespective of blindness. Besides, who would film her videos if she didn’t? That said, I don’t know that she doesn’t do routes on her own while she’s in familiar territory. It’s just that “Molly goes to CVS” is not particularly interesting to her ~2M followers.

I just think that she does more harm than good to the way people who are sighted and know little about blindness view those who are blind. I think she has backed off her advocacy claims in favor of calling herself a YouTube influencer type which is a plus. I know many totally blind young adults who travel independently.

I think it's mostly another case of young female TouTuber who grew up in a privileged home, found success super early in their magical career, and is generally a bit naive and out of touch with the real world because of it. YT is full of young women like this. Molly just happens to also be blind.
