help. braille keys on iphone overlapped (self.Blind)
submitted by elphio
Hi. I'm helping a teacher who has a problem just his iphone. we are in italy and i can't go to him so i can only help him with google meet on the notebook (con la webcam) and TeamViewer QuickSupport on the iphone (by the way, is there an alternative that allows me to control the iphone remotely and not just view it as teamviewer does?).
His problem is that the keys 4, 5 and 6 on the virtual braille keyboard of the iphone are "overlapping". The 1, 2 and 3 keys have no problem. The problem occurs in "screen away mode". In "tabletop mode" this does not happen, the 6 keys are well aligned.
Unfortunately he is struggling to use the tabletop mode and would like to restore the "screen away" mode with the default key layout.
How can I help him?
I don't really know how braille works on iphone and the distance makes everything much more complicated.

To recalibrate the keys, press dots 4, 5 and 6 together, release them and then press dots 1, 2 and 3 together. You will hear a message saying "dot positions calibrated" if this is done correctly.

Thank you. This morning I was able to solve the problem by guiding the teacher through the webcam. Thank you very much!

This is the correct answer.

I cannot do table top mode on an iPhone 7, but it works great on my iPhone X because of the bigger screen.

Hi there, you cannot remotely control and iPhone? It isn't possible also try re-calibrating the dots as the user commented
Whatever applications I have tried for remote access on iOS, only allowed the screen to be shared? So the phone cannot be controlled perhaps try anydesk?
elphio [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Unfortunately, we tried Both Anydesk and Teamviewer. Neither allows remote control. With Anydesk the connection was unstable. Teamviewer instead allows us to have a better connection. Unfortunately the process to start remote viewing is complicated and not very accessible.
Sagar5786 1 points 3y ago
Anydesk does have some accessibility issues so I believe from what you have explained it only allows screen sharing? The other thing is can you tell me which iOS? You can jailbreak if on iOS 11 or lower, then use vnc.

I don't know the ios version. Usually this teacher is working at school and we can meet every day. I don't think jailbreaking is the best solution for a temporary problem. Especially when I can't have the phone with me physically during the lockdown.

I understand your concern to be precise you do know that iOS is a close infrastructure? Therefore forget about the customisation without jb second I cannot guarantee the remote wll work as well, even after jailbreaking? Because it only is limited to iOS 11 and lower for the time being.
Perhaps Android? Would be another choice? Otherwise unfortunately nothing else can be done

Tabletop mode is not recommended for use with iPhones. The screen just isn’t big enough. During braille screen input a three finger swipe down will lock his orientation.

I prefer table top on iPhone with the orientation locked. Screen away mode is weird and I can't get used to it.
CloudyBeep 2 points 3y ago
I find the reverse. But it's great we have options.

indeed
80percentaccurate 1 points 3y ago
Neat. I wonder if it’s become more of an option since screens have gotten larger.

if he uses the rotary to switch from braille screen input to something else, then back to BSI, it should first want to recalibrate where the dots are.
Assuming it’d the VO built in BSI he’s having issues wirh
elphio [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Yes, he uses the rotary to change the writing mode. I'm not sure where the option to recalibrate the dots is. We'll probably do this option tomorrow morning and I'm getting as much information as I can. But is there a user manual? I can't find one.

it should trigger the recalibrate when back to BSI mode. or also try VO off and back on.

too asleep to try to figure if they’ve covered bsi with detail but this should hopefully be a proper manual https://help.apple.com/voiceover/mac/10.15/ or have some options to find the link to the relevant doc
