Story With a Blind Character (self.Blind)
submitted by lordinorange
I'm making a choose your own adventure game for my class and I wanted to write the main character as a blind person. The core conflict of the story has to do with their ability to see. So I wanted to ask: is it offensive that the character wants to see? Is it better if they're conflicted about whether or not they want to see? Or should I try to leave sight out of it all together?

It's a common trope in literature. In practice, people born blind generally have less of a desire to see than people who lost their vision when they were old enough to remember seeing. As this is just for your class, it probably doesn't matter very much how you write the character, just as long as there's more to them as just a blind person who wants the ability to see.

I'm blind and sure I'd love to be able to see. It's not the core conflict of my whole life, though. It's like Donald Trump or global warming or the Chernobyl disaster. It isn't great, but there's nothing I can do about it so I don't spend a lot of time thinking about it. When I do, yes, it's annoying and I'd rather not be in this situation, but it's not like it ruins my day. I think there are people for whom it is much more difficult and you can show that, but if you want that to be realistic you might want to show that your character lost their sight as an adult and it maybe hasn't been long. The problem is that at that point he might not be very competent in dealing with it yet. I wouldn't overplay it anyway.

I think if you allow the character to have interactions that go beyond their blindness you can make the story about their struggle with whether they want to see.For authentic inspiration go to threads asking about if you had the chance would you have your sight back (I know for a fact there is one fairly recently on r/blind) make sure to talk to partially sighted individuals for feedback on how it's going. ❤$1

I think their conflict about whether they want to see is realistic and would be interesting
