The easy answer, is whenever you feel like you need it. You won’t need it in environments like your home because you’re very familiar with your home. If you have a good amount of usable vision you may not even need it at school or during your regular day, but your mobility instructor may ask you to use it just to get used to the idea. Otherwise, if you feel like you need it, for safety to detect things like drop offs or so that people know about your visual impairment, then use it.

Asking the same question twenty different ways is hardly productive. I believe you've gotten advice on this very issue on your other threads.

Hey now. Be nice. It’s clear he’s young and fairly new at cane use. He’s got questions and he’s trying to figure this thing out. I’d rather someone ask questions than hide their cane away and never use it.

I get that, but if you look at his post history, you'll see very similar questions asked a bunch of times, each time altered just slightly. This isn't the first time.

I know. I know. This is a topic he’s perseverating on, but we don’t know his situation. For all we know he’s had a mobility instructor out to see him once or twice so far and he’s even more confused than when he was just waiting for an instructor wondering how class was going to go.

IMO: Use your cane when you cannot rely on your remaining vision (in combination with your other senses) to keep you safe while traveling, whether that’s at a store, at school, or around the neighborhood. Use it indoors, outdoors, whenever you need a substitute for the visual information you need to be safe. If you don’t feel you need to use it in some places, that’s normal, too — I know people who are legally blind and don’t use a cane at all around familiar places. I also know people who are legally blind who use a cane at all times — it’s helpful both for the information and feedback you receive from it, and also to identify you to others (especially drivers) as having low vision or being blind/legally blind.
