Desired output on a wearable? (self.Blind)
submitted by SlightlySaltyPopcorn
Hi all,

I am currently working on a project for university where I have to design a navigation wearable for 2040. I won't bother you with the details, but I do have a question.

One of the possible user groups is blind and visually impaired people. We are not allowed to have directions given through speech, but we are allowed to use sounds or vibrations for the output.

I've always been told that blind people have a great sense of hearing, so I was wondering if a wearable that uses sound for giving directions would be undesirable, due to possibly bringing interference with your regular listening to your environment. If so, would vibration be a good second? If it is not undesirable, what form of sounds would work for you?

I am looking forward to your answers and thanks in advance.

That depends a great deal on what the navigation wearable is suppose to do. If it is suppose to give someone turn by turn directions of a long, complex routes with street crossings and complicated turns, voice would be necessary to give those kinds of directions.

Sound is quite common, but you don't want to drown out things you need to near (such as traffic). Even with binaural headphones, it may also not be precise enough for what angle to walk (although often good enough). Also, depending on the age range (older people are more likely to have hearing loss), they may not hear well enough for that.

Vibrations can be trickier, because it can be harder for gradiations of the same degree as sound. Most devices I know that use vibrations only have two vibrations setting usually, one weak and one strong.
