I'm a 27F and I have Aniridia. If you don't know, it's when the pupil is fully dilated 24/7. I actually have no Iris (color) to my eye. It's solid black. But what I was wondering is how many other people have it? And what are some difficulties you have living day to day? And how soon did you start loosing vision? I just want to compare my progress to others.

I don’t have this but my pupils are more dilated then most peoples and they have delayed reactivity. For me it makes me super light sensitive which triggers my nystagmus like crazy. I think mines caused by my optic nerve problems that I’ve had since birth.

Yeah I'm super sensitive to light too. The nystagmus is annoying but I've gotten really great control over mine so it doesn't bother me that much.

You mean like by finding a null point? Mines quite severe. Can’t really get it under control. Do you use a long cane?
Midget_Katt [OP]3 points3y ago
I don't know how I do it. I learned when I was a kid. I couldn't take any notes because of it so I had to do something. No I have my husband that walks me everywhere. You could say he's my cane.

You should get a cane! They’re amazing! I like knowing where I’m going to put my foot xD

I have it in both eyes! I have a prosthetic Iris in my right and no iris in my left. I am very sensitive to light but most of my blindness is from that paired with other conditions like glaucoma. Private message me if you have any questions :D

I don't have glaucoma yet. But my eye pressure is really high so I'm close. Okay thank you!

I was born with a very severe form of aniridia in both eyes. It was diagnosed when I was 6 months old. I've been wearing dark sunglasses since I was a baby. At age 5 I had to undergo my first surgery. I'm now 31 and I've had so many surgeries that I honestly lost track of the exact number (somewhere between 10-12). In fact, I've just had a particularly difficult one 2 months ago and I'm still recovering from it (there were complications, unfortunately).
When I was 14, I went completely blind on my left eye due to the glaucoma and cataract. I had been losing my vision since birth but this last big drop happened within a very short time period. I still remember feeling incredibly devastated. My parents and I cried a lot together in those weeks. It was particularly difficult for me because I was just about to enter Gymnasium (Swiss version of high school). I knew it was going to be very tough academically and I knew I would have to get used to a ton of new things, make new friends etc. My new school was located in a different city and I had to commute there by public transit. It was a very scary time to lose my eyesight.
Fortunately, my right eye remained strong and stable over the next few years. I had about 20/200 vision in that right eye (10%).
However, around age 26, the vision in my right eye suddenly began to decrease much faster than before. Since then, I have lost practically all of my functional vision. I have about 2% left and these 2% are insanely precious to me. The past few years have been quite a rollercoaster ride for me and by extension also for my wife. I've had phases where I just wanted to give up everything and seriously considered suicide. Luckily, I have a great therapist and an amazing, loving wife. Together, they have been carrying me through this tempest. My wife and I are now talking about having children and I have made a promise to myself that I want to be able to see my first child before I go completely blind. To be honest though, I'm still terrified of the idea of losing my vision completely. I truly hope that I can at least keep the perception of light.
Anyway, if you're interested to pm me, I'd be happy to talk more. Aniridia is a super rare disorder and it's awesome to meet some other people who suffer from the same thing. In my entire life, this is the very first time I have ever met anyone else with aniridia.

I know I'm late but I also have it.

I've had Aniridia since birth.
I didn't really notice my eyes were getting worse, even when I had to move closer to the board teachers would write on, untill 2011 when doctors failed to check for Glaucoma up until 2011, that's when I was told how severe my loss of peripheral vision was. I think this also affected my photophobia greatly too, can't go anywhere without sunglasses anymore. It's also made me night blind too.
I think the combination we get of Aniridia, Nystagmus, Cataracts and Glaucoma (and possibly some other things depending on your situation) is quite a handful, and I won't lie that it's been such a struggle for me since everything went down in 2011, especially with job hunting
I really do hope they can find some sort of cure for Aniridia though.

Have you ever tried esight or other similar device? I'm looking for info to help my cousin.
ConstantIncident1 points7m ago
I went to a convention about technology for the blind and visually impaired a few weeks ago and when I saw a similar device. I got speaking to the guy at the counter who explained it was more specialised for people who had lost a lot of central vision (Like Macular). It's good, but I'd say by how it was described to me that it's mainly for people who have several central vision loss.
I myself get along fine with a cane, zoom functions on devices and handheld magnifiers. I would probably recommend those more since you'd get the exact same functions from them (like zooming in on small text) and that they're probably cheaper in the long run. 👌
Again, it's a case by case basis so I'd ask your cousin exactly what vision they've lost and base searches around that.
