Hi all! I’ve been trying to help my dad with his iPhone and it’s been problem after problem for him. We have attempted to get him the Blind Shell and no one can get it to work with AT&T. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a completely blind older man? He really needs emails, phone calls and texts. I appreciate any advice!!
Edit - to add the following:
Hi all! Thank you for the feedback! I’m learning how to use voice over now so I can teach him! As for now, we’re gonna stick with the iPhone! Thank you all for the help!!!

iPhones are definitely the most accessible and easy to use. What problems are you having?

I agree with the other reply. iPhones are the most accessible. Maybe try going to a Genius bar and they can help you fix any problems you’re having

As others have stated, he has to learn how to use voiceover. The iPhone really is the best choice in terms of both accessibility and overall security. There are many free and low cost Voiceover specific podcasts, guides, online tutorials etc.

Turn on Voiceover. settings>accessibility>voiceover>select "on" (I think is the exact path). Then look at some videos or play around with it to figure out how to use it. Definitely not at all complicated though. Siri by itself won't help.

Hi. Like what others have said, you will need to learn how to use voiceover before teaching your dad. I am mostly self taught using YouTube videos that my family found for me. Once you get the basics down, it isn’t that bad. I like the videos by the Hadley School for the blind, but it is important to check the iOS version that the teacher is using in the videos since some things have changed in the last few years. It is just minor stuff like the gesture to open the control center. Also enable the shortcut that allows you to triple tap either the home or screen button to quickly turn voiceover off or on. It is an easy fix for when you accidentally turn off the screen and speech at the same time or some other problem.

I believe both the Blind Shell and Lucia have 3G options that networks aren’t supporting anymore, so you have to get the one with 5G and even then it might not work with your plan. It sounds like your dad might need some training to find the combo that works best for him. He might be happy with a flip phone and an Amazon Alexa, or a flip phone and some computer training. I personally like the iPhone the best, but sometimes it can be a lot to get seniors to commit to learning the system needed since using an iPhone while blind is very different than using it sighted. Keep in mind Siri can’t do everything he needs. It can sure make his life a lot easier, but if he’s functionally blind he’ll need to learn to use Voiceover to have the best experience.

His email won’t come through regularly and we can’t get Siri to tell him who his missed calls are (the screen will just show it). I’ve made sure all the settings were correct, and I’ll make sure we get to the Genius Bar once it reopens!

Are you using Voiceover? He can do a lot more than checking his missed calls/emails with it.

He will need to learn to use VoiceOver.

OP will need to learn VoiceOver then teach Dad. This is the best way to do it in my experience.
At least then when Dad says "is it three finger triple tap or two finger double tap" then OP will show some sympathy and might know the answer.
