Gift idea’s for a blind 12 year old boy... (self.Blind)
submitted by unsunglibrary
My girlfriend does post pals and there’s a kid (12M) on there who’s been going through a tough time, and she wants to send him something. He happens to be completely blind, with no light perception, but can read a little Braille. He loves Star Wars and science. We’re looking for gift ideas, I thought I’d ask for some advise to avoid insensitive/unwanted gifts. We’re in the UK btw. Thanks!

If he likes movies in general, you could try with setting him with an account in the audiovault to download other movies which are audio-described. I am not sure if he's watched audio-described Star Wars or not, but if he hasn't it would be a good opportunity for him.

Or help him to get a DisneyPlus account which has all of them audio described and isn't breaking the law.

True. Aditionally, if we're going by the legal side of things, you could also set him up with Netflix. Has tons of audio-described content.

In some countries, including the US (to my knowledge; I don't live there), possessing pirated material is a criminal offence.

I think it's only the distribution of pirated content that's a crime here in the US. Regardless, I suspect one could make a very compelling argument under the doctrine of fair use in the unlikely event it ever became a problem.

Its not illegal if there is no picture. Audio description is excempt from those copyright laws. Source: My Dad who is blind and a lawyer and actually checked.

He might like the Star Wars extended universe audiobooks. Or other sci-fi books if he wants to branch out. Maybe get him an Audible gift card?

I second the gift card!

Definitely this. I love this idea. He can still read whatever he wants, but it's audio, and good, and fantastic in all the ways. This suggestion makes me happy. I wish I was the 12y/o now.

A little less exciting but check out the RNIB online shop. Has some cool handy gadgets that he might find useful!
I like the mugs that are hard to spill and the liquid level indicator (great for tea or coffee or hot chocolate drinkers).

Braille Uno came out this year
oncenightvaler 1 points 3y ago
haha it did not come out this year it has been out since at least 2000.

Maybe from specialty stores that open regular uno and braille it. NFB released one In 2020. I was on the wait list to get it. If it was available 20 years ago there’s no way CNIB employees would sit around brailling each card when you can buy them.

A Rubik's cube with the first letter of the color in braille on each Square. I saw a girl having that in a blind fencing event and it's really neat. Instead of pushing her eyes or playing with her fingers or rock themselves back and forth for stimulus, she plays with that. As a coach for blind fencing I find that this is really a good idea and helps them on many levels.

There's special glasses that can help the blind see color get those

You could always get him gift certificates and then figure out writing in Braille on the outside how much its worth.

If your girlfriend likes she should look up www.audiovault.net and get all the Star Wars movies in a folder in described video if he does not already have those, or some other science fiction you two think he will like.

.

I loved Bopp-It and Torx games where you manipulate the contraption controls.

What would any kid like? That's the first question. Kids don't necessarily like books but they love toys. The toy light Sabers are kind of cool.

Lego has a line of Braille bricks for the visually impaired.

Also, check out https://legofortheblind.com/. It was created by a blind person who loves Legos and has instructions for many traditional Lego kits.
