Netflix For The Blind (self.Blind)
submitted by N7EVEN_
Hi Guys

I had an idea for a netflix extension which allowed the visually impaired, like myself to be able to watch netflix with friends but have audio description dictating through a air pod without having to make said friends having to hear the AD too. Can someone help? Thanks

You won't be able to do this with a Netflix extension. This is because Netflix receives audio description already mixed into the main audio. You have no way of getting at the track to play it through headphones. I encourage you to contact Netflix Support to request it because they are always interested in improving audio description—last year at one of their hack-a-thons, a team of developers tried to get AI to generate audio description, so they're definitely interested in innovating.

Couldn't the extension play the regular studio track and then play the AD track in the background somewhere? There might be sync issues, of course.
CloudyBeep 2 points 3y ago
It could in theory, but you have no way of getting at those tracks because you can only play one of the two tracks at a time. I'm sure that Netflix has measures in place to stop people from finding them—after all, they're foremost a tech company.

What I'm suggesting is you play the entire movie or show in the background with the other track and pull the audio.

I don't understand what you're saying.

That's for the extra knowledge! I'll defo get in contact with them if that's the case.

To be honest, I don't think they would implement such a feature because of the low return on investment and the possible introduction of bugs, but I'd also like to have this as an option, so I'll also mention it to them when I next contact Netflix Support.

Can’t your friend just learn to ignore the audio description? I live with my parents and my TV is set to audio described if it is available and they say they don’t even recognise it there and it doesn’t bother them

I mean of course they can. But if the option was there where they didn't have to then I'd prefer that. I only recently started listening with AD so I know how disruptive it can be if you don't need it. Secondly, I tend to watch netflix with a number of different people and sometimes they dont have experience of AD. So in essence it'd allow us to watch something with AD and not have to worry about whether someone is used to it. Hope this makes sense lol

Yes it does

This is a cool idea!

Thank you!

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but an idea that comes to mind is something like $1 It's an extension that let's you synchronize what you're watching on Netflix with other people so that everyone can watch it together.

It's purpose is for people who aren't in the same place, but maybe it could be utilized in this situation. You may be able to use the description track while the other people use the normal one.

I have no idea if this would work, but I thought I'd mention it in case it's something that you'd want to try out. I've never used the extension so I'm unsure if it's even accessible.

That's where I got inspiration from for my idea!! I'm sure its possible, it'll just take some work. Thanks for your comment tho! I think it'll help others too who didn't know about netflix party.
CloudyBeep 2 points 3y ago
I haven't tried it, but I've heard that its accessibility could be better and that all screens share the same audio and subtitle choices, so I don't think it's a solution.

Well damn. That's unfortunate.

You might want to ask about those kind of apps on applevis.com

That kind of app for netflix doesn’t exist but there’s others.

Thanks!

No problem.

netflix has nothing to do with the production of audio description.
In the movie theators they manage to divide the movie track and the audio description track like you mention. So its possible, and its certainly a good idea.
CloudyBeep 3 points 3y ago
What do you mean? Netflix commissions thousands of hours of audio description each year, which they integrate into their app. Although they don't produce it themselves, they definitely know what's involved as they have technical specifications on their website.

Edit: Most Hollywood movies have at least two audio description tracks produced. One is for theaters, which has just the audio description which you listen to with the audio of the movie through another speaker. The other track, which goes to iTunes and DVD releases, has the audio description mixed with the main audio. Netflix normally doesn't need to worry about the first kind of track since most of the content they need audio description for never has a theatrical release.

It just requires a software developer or even Netflix themselves, to add that feature in as a 'plug in'.
