The Things You Miss The Most (self.Blind)
submitted by lak3n
I’m going blind without proper help. It eats me alive whenever I wake up. I can’t go to the doctor because of this pandemic.

I wrote a letter for myself if the day comes you know. It was me fully acknowledging that I may go sightless forever. And I wonder if I’ll still be able to see though my memories, still remember the ones I love the most.

What are the things you wish you could see again?

Mine would be my handwriting, nature, and my loved ones.

It’s so sad that I’ve taken this gift for granted.

If you are going blind without treatment, you should be able to be seen even with the pandemic. You need to fight for your vision if your condition is treatable, I know it can be difficult and overwhelming from personal experience. But you need to try!

Doctors don't want you to go blind.

Beauty.

I went suddenly and totally blind about 3.5 years ago due to a bad fall that damanaged my right optic nerve.

I miss beauty. Whether it's the sky, some hummingbirds in the yard, or a handsome young guy walking around the mall (I'm gay), I miss being able to see beauty. Simple as that.

Yeah, both natural and sexual beauty is what I miss. if they ever figure out how to regenerate optic nerve cells and I get to see again, I'll probably come off as a total pervert for the first couple weeks while checking everyone out, haha.

Where to even start.

At face value, I can say that what I miss the most is being able to use my gadgets the same way everyone else does. Screen readers let me have most of my digital autonomy back, but it's simply not the same. Taking in a UI one element at a time doesn't compare to taking in the entire interface holistically. I miss being able to just read print. I miss being able to just look at videos and know what's going on. I miss being able to just look at pictures and art. Most of all, I miss videogames. I had Doom 2016 and the Mass Effect trilogy downloaded and lined up for me to experience, but my sight became too poor to play before I could get to them.

If I think more about the question, I think I also miss being able to take in the world around me. Going blind has opened me up to the plethora of soundscapes; from cities to mountains, there's almost always something interesting to listen to around me.

If I go deeper still, I wish I could see the people around me. I wish I could see my own face as it changes. I wish I could see my girlfriend, my family, and my platonic friends..

All of these have brought me a lot of pain, but my memories are still intact. I still know what everyday objects look like. I can still picture the faces of the people I know and love. I can still dream just as vividly as before. No, it's not the same, but it is comforting. It's a bit like a journal or scrapbook. You may not be able to experience it again, but the memories are still there for you.

Going blind is an emotional evisceration. It sucks, no matter how you analyze it. You're going to be angry. You're going to be sad. You're going to grieve. It's just part of the process. My life got put on hold for almost two years when I lost my sight. It hasn't been easy, but I've recovered. Quarantine's put a damper on things, but I've remade myself, and so can you. It's not the end of the line.

Are you absolutely sure you can't go to the doctor? If your sight loss is progressive, then that's a damn good reason to break quarantine. I would demand to be seen by a specialist. Being blind isn't a be-all end-all, but you'd be better off if you preserve the sight you've got left.

I don't really miss sight itself, only the functionality and entertainment that it enabled. I really do miss using computers and gadgets like a normal person and either immersing myself or having cooperative group experiences in video-games. I'm still a geek and have recently returned to coding, but don't feel as empowered by and in control of technology as I used to feel.

Reading a regular book.

When I was a kid I was a fiend when it came to books. I would always be four chapters ahead of my class when we'd read together, and I was known to read instead of paying attention to the lessons.

Alrhough I do have some sight left, I still can't pick up a book and make out more than a word without straining my eyes and getting a headache.

I still have a few books for sentimental purposes but I get sad whenever I think of when I was 7 and could sit and read them no problem

I do have an electronic magnifier and a few e-books but it's not the same. It doesn't have the same feel of cosying up on the couch and flicking through crisp pages.

I do admit I am lucky that I can still see a bit, but I sure do miss staying up late with my little lamp on with a book in my hand and fascination in my head.

I relate with you so much!
I’m totally blind so I can’t even do what you do, and even though I’m still reading a lot using my phone and book share, I agree that it’s very different from sitting in silence while your eyes move across the page. I miss it a lot

I think you should learn braille.
midnight-muffins 2 points 3y ago
I am in the process of learning it actually! I like it a lot but I suppose I still have some nostalgia for inked words

I saw my Opthalmologist last week since I sometimes need shots to keep my vision. You should be able to go in too.

The thing I miss most is tabletop wargaming. I just want to paint some miniatures, make some terrain, and push some toy soldiers round a battlefield. A close second is reading books.

Regarding your situation: if you have a treatable condition, get it treated. Don't let the current situation stop you. Just make sure you're taking all the precautions you can to minimise the chance of contracting the virus.

Hey. I might be in a similar situation. Can I know how you're doing?

I lost my sight when I was 14 years old with no warning. I had eye surgeries etc but nothing worked. As far as that time of my life, I miss watching movies and tv, playing video games, drawing, reading print books, having the independence to just go out and ride my bike, walk into town, go in the woods, that sort of thing. Just seeing things in general... You don't really appreciate it until you lose it.

I'm going to be 39 soon. I get bummed out sometimes because I know what I'm missing. I think this is different for people who never had sight or lost it when they were really little. I'll never drive, work in film or video game development, which did interest me, never see my girlfriend, kids, friends, amazing light shows at concerts, the fantastic quality of the graphics and displays they have these days... Also, there are so many things in the world I wish I could see;famous places, archeological sites, art, the list goes on. (Porn? Yeah, okay, let's add that too if we're being honest here.)

I can recall a lot of things mentally but I find that as I get older, I am forgetting specific things as far as calling up visual memories is concerned. What can you do though? I guess it's just one of those things...

Well I’m currently healing from eye surgery and can’t see much. I miss using technology relatively normally, even if I needed to zoom in before. I miss walking around independently, even though I used my cane. I miss playing Sims for hours and watching videos/TV/movies without needing audio descriptions. I want to be able to listen to music and browse stuff without VoiceOver talking over my music. I miss writing with my Apple Pencil on my iPad and looking at subreddits with images. I know my situation might only be temporary but sometimes, these things get me down.

I miss music

I’m not going completely blind but my vision is pretty bad. One thing that sucks for me is if I’m anywhere and there’s someone i know, i will probably not recognize them because my bad vision. Looking at loved ones without squinting my eyes is another thing that i miss.
CosmicBunny97 1 points 3y ago
Recognising people you know? What is this magic?
HideoKojimaJr 1 points 3y ago
So this time i was at the vet with my dog and a friend’s girlfriend was across from me, I didn’t even know she was there until she talked to me haha
CosmicBunny97 1 points 3y ago
Dude, on my 16th birthday, my best friend came to surprise me and I didn't even recognise her!
Also the amount of times people think I've been rude because they say hi to me and I ignore them because I can't recognise them...
