When I went for O&M training I met a young woman (24) who had never learned to cut meat. She was blind since birth and totally dependent on others. I also met a young woman (22) who was blind since birth and was in grad school and travelled internationally independently. It depends on what a parent chooses in terms of independence.
It’s hard to let your child do something that has risks, but otherwise you stunt their growth. I’ve got 5 btw.

I don't know. I'm not a parent but I assume they are just afraid of letting go of a child they love and are worried they'll get hurt. This notion is exasperrated by sight loss as it makes it more difficult to live indepently.
In most circumstances it comes from a place of love and soon enough they will let go, it's pretty bittersweet to watch their baby grow up after all.
