What do you think is a good accessible alternative to an online furniture planner? (self.Blind)
submitted by GrandmaSlappy
Hi everyone, I'm building an apartment website and we'd like to have an interactive tool that let's users place furniture on a floor plan in 2D.

Obviously this isn't very accessible!

If I wanted to provide an alternative for screen readers, what would you want to have? Room dimensions? Descriptions of what can fit? Anything else?

Thank you!

This is totally doable. While I don't know the ins and outs of coding it, I see it the same way as navigating a Chess board. If each unit of space is marked out and coded, it should be easy enough to add and move furniture around the room. The screen reader could then tell me, for example, that Sofa 1 stretches across a2, a3, a4 and a5, with Coffee Table occupying c3, d3, c4 and d4, and sofa 2 stretching across f2, f3, f4 and f5.

I might know a few people who could better help you make this happen in the right way. Feel free to shoot me a pm.

Thanks for reaching out.

RS Games has Battle Ship, and it has the grid very accessible, and it lets players organize the ships on the grid. It would be a great example for the explination mentioned on this comment.

Great shout. Exactly how I envisioned it.

This sounds like one heck of a task. Best of luck to you.
