Is there a way to finish college with my disabilities? (self.Blind)
submitted by miragerain
I started college about 7 years ago but I don't know how to graduate. I don't know how to pick a major I could reasonably do with my disabilities.

I have core classes just about completed. I've tried beginning classes of Compsci and Engineering majors but failed them because I couldn't see or hear well enough. The college's Disability center couldn't accommodate for both my vision and hearing disabilities.

So what do i do now?

What technology do you know how to use? Do you know Braille? Do you know how to use screen readers? Do you have any experiance with tactile graphics? Do you know any blind individuals in the field of study that you are interested in?
Finding a mentor in the field that are interested in, would be quite beneficial.

I don't know anyone, thought I'd ask here to see what kind of careers blind people pick.

I have screen reading and magnification. I don't use Braille as I can still read with magnification. Haven't heard of tactile graphics before.

You should have advocated for large print graphics and equations. But I agree that rather than learning what other blind people can do, you should assume you can do anything and find mentors to help you achieve what you want to do. There are blind people in all manner of STEM occupations.

The teachers sometimes tried to draw larger on the boards but my vision is such that I can barely see if I'm standing a few feet away. I could never even write fast enough to cover everything.

Then you need better magnification technology or to learn braille. When you're using magnification software on your computer, what's the zoom level at?

Have you tried a bioptic (telescope glasses) to see the board? It depends on how much vision you have but if you can still see the board from a few feet away, magnification could def help- ask me any questions you might have, i work for a low vision specialist.

Why couldn't they accommodate you?

The majors I picked involved math classes. The Disability center provided a transcriber for my classes who would write down what the teachers said. But they couldn't capture the visual part of the lectures, such as graphs and equations, on the text transcripts.

Why couldn't they give you tactile versions of the graphs?

I've never heard of that before. But isn't that more for primary school? This was calculus and physics classes. Whenever I'd ask the DRC about it, they just told the transcribers to try to cover the visual parts somehow in the transcripts... and the transcribers would just write "[on board]" or try to summarize in typing what the teachers were drawing. DRC also suggested I take photos of the board to enlarge later, which I did, but then I ran into the problem of not having a reference point to sync the transcripts with the photos.

Even professional blind mathematicians need braille (or large print) equations and tactile (or large print) diagrams.
