What are your favourite Blind/VI hacks for day-to-day life? (self.Blind)
submitted by letspaintthesky
I'm just asking because a) who couldn't use more hacks? and b) Someone posted this youtube video hack about contrasting tape on the doorway so that you don't run into it, and I found it very useful- $1 just earlier today, in fact, I used a bright coloured sheet of paper on a white cupboard that had been moved very close to the doorway of the kitchen-It immediately reduced my bumping into it until I was used to the new position.

For many of my older clients, they can get disoriented easily in their own home. Something I sometimes suggest is leaving a radio on low, or a ticking clock, near an important landmark/location. For example, a low radio in the bathroom, so if they get confused, it would be easier for them to locate. You don't want it so loud it annoys you/the family, though (which can be important if the person has some hearing loss).

Wow, I guess I somehow never connected the sight and/or hearing issues with other health issues like disorientation and memory problems that older folks can have. This just totally taught me that lesson. Thanks for your reply :)

Yeah, comorbidity (having more than one health condition) becomes more common as people get older.

I once visited a client that was living in a long term care facility. I was speaking to him and doing an assessment, and after a few minutes, he asks me to turn on the lights on the room, because it was so dark. I explain to him that he lost his vision, and he freaks out. I managed to get him calmed down, and continue talking/doing the assessment. About 5 minutes later, he asks me to turn on the lights in the room, because it is so dark. His memory was so bad, he kept forgetting that he had lost his vision, so I had to inform him again, resulting in another freak out. That happened about 4 or 5 times before we had to stop, because it was clear we wouldn't be able to do anything for him.
